Why do you think this photograph was taken?
Tell me about a useful course outside school that you have taken or would like to take.
How far do you agree with the view that students should focus on their main school subjects and should not take courses outside school?

The photograph shows two men laying on the ground simulating an emergency where a person is having a heart attack. It shows patients in need of cpr with two other men demonstrating how to do the cpr. I think this photograph was taken to raise awareness about CPR so that people could join this programme to learn how to do CPR so that they might be able to learn to save a life. Personally I have participated in this activity and have learnt the valuable skill of saving alife

In my opinion, this photograph was taken to spread awareness and promote first aid courses to people on all walks of life. At the foreground, I can see two instructors demonstrating the procedures to do CPR. The student is a middle-aged man who is shadowing the actions of the instructor in front of him while listening to the female instructor. At the background, I see students who are of younger ages. They are actively participating in the first aid course too. As a member from uniform group, I think spreading awareness for this course is vital. During the first aid course, I learnt about the conditions to start doing CPR for example, Jewellery and body hair must be removed before starting the CPR. I was also informed on where to find the AED box in different neighbourhoods which could be found near lift lobbies or near the receptionist desk in shopping malls. With a first aid qualification, I am now equipped to play an important role in helping anyone who gets injured or under cardiac arrest . Raising awareness for such skills can be life changing as one will be better prepared when problems arise.

In between them, is a women and I’m guessing she is there to supervise the first aid process to make sure that first aid is being carried out properly.
I think the photograph was taken to encourage people to take up first aid courses since it is a necessary skill in the future and if we would to be in a situation when first aid is needed to be performed, we would be able to help.

Last year, during the December holidays, I went for this cooking course at Cookery Magic. At first, I was quite reluctant about this course as I found it useless.I kept questioning why I needed to learn to cook because my mum would cook for me and I could buy food outside or just know how to cook instant noodles. I think that the cooking instructor noticed that I was not very eager for the class so she came up to me and asked me why I looked so sullen. I was very frank and told her that I thought this course was a waste of time. She looked amused but didn’t seem offended. She patiently asked me what I would do if my mum was not at home and I was alone hungry at home. I confidently said that I would order food delivery. She then asked if that was healthy. I was taken aback by her question…
Left with that thought, the course began. I quickly found myself immersed in chopping and stirring. It was unexpectedly satisfying to see the onions caramelise. During the course, the cooking instructor gave some advice on healthier choice ingredients we could substitute. I realised the the importance on knowing basic cooking skills.
Now, I am able to cook meals for me and my family. Ending is abrupt; what have u learnt from this course

I disagree.

I think that students should learn courses which teach basic life skills like, first aid skills. First aid skills would benefits students as we can help people who have injured or even help ourselves when we are injured. Another basic life skills can be cooking. Cooking is necessary for us as if there are no one to cook for us, we would be able to cook for ourselves. We can even make delicious and tasty food for our families. This such courses that teach us basic life skills would benefit us a lot in our life.

In addition, students going out to do activities helps them relieves pent up stress, as studying can get quite stressful. They may find the course fun when they actually go through the the program.

However, I think studying is important too. Our results in our major exams would determine what career path we would be in. If we do not study hard enough, we would not be able to get good grades and it would affect our future. Having a bad career would make our life a challenging one in the future. Therefore, focusing more on our studying is very important for our future
Sweeping assumptions that bad grades = bad future; specify which subjects and link how grades can determine the next course of education first; links must be made clearer; No conclusion

I agree that student should focus on main school subjects and should not take courses outside school. Learning school subject is essential as it is helpful for further studies in poly and junior college. Compared to outside courses, school courses are more important to find career opportunities. Outside courses may be costly, especially for permanent residents and international students. On the other hand, outside courses can be essential to develop basic skills like computing and first aid.

To enter further education like junior college and poly, basic knowledge like science and math are applied to real world problems thus, it is vital to have an understanding on school subjects to apply for jobs. For example, physics is needed for engineering courses as they have to ensure the stability of the structure of a building. Hence, without the required knowledge, students will not be able to produce good quality work.

Furthermore, outside courses are expensive as they are taught over a period of time. In addition, school fees are costly towards international students and permanent residents without government subsidies.

Points are repetitive; counterargument about how external courses can be good is missing

I disagree with the view as I feel like courses outside school gives us more experience in life and we can gain more than just studying basic subjects in school. I have been to many courses such as Taekwondo and I am currently a Poom belt. I learnt self-defence, discipline and manners, something the school doesn’t emphasis on. During a class, I had a lot of fun, training and mingling with my friends.

However, I also agree with view as studies are also important. In Singapore, it’s education emphasises heavily on results and hence, students strive to get the best grades they could. And right now, we have our O-levels coming soon, we need more time to study and revise.

In conclusion, I still disagree as courses outside school brings more life lesson and experience, however we also shouldn’t neglect our studies.

Elaborate more on specific subjects and its benefits of focusing on them; what are the life skills and values taken away from taekwondo class?

A useful course that I took outside is about programming and making my own app. I participated in an online course during my June holidays about how to develop a phone app by myself. In the course, I learnt the basics on how to create websites and simple games. For example, I used apps like Thunkable, Scratch and Python to learn and develop and learn the languages to instruct what the computer should do. Using these skills, I hope I would be able to create my very own first person shooter game in the future. I joined this online course as i have a strong passion for IT and wish to join a course related to IT, for example, Applied Artificial Intelligence in Nanyang Polytechnic. Good to explain why you want to venture into the gaming industry

I agree because courses outside school is not as important as main school subjects and it cannot be used as an examinable subjects and use up the valuable time that student require to study for exams.

Firstly, Students who go for these courses would not have sufficient time to study and revise for their upcoming exam.this may result in the students feeling overwhelmed and stressed which might affect their emotional well being and ability to focus in class. For example, studying for humanities paper requires a lot of focus and requires time and energy to read and memorise the topics fully.
Secondly, some courses must be paid to enter. This is not a problem but it is the practical issues when when to use it, and how to use it. For example, ballet is a useless course as it does not help you in the outside world. It is only useful if you inspire to take up performing arts.
However, learning first aid is important as it can really safe someone life in there is an accident. As the saying goes, Every second is precious, especially when saving someone life
However, we are not professional and therefore might have a risk of breaking someone rib cage in the process of CPR. This will greatly disrupt the person life as he has to take a long time to recover from the injury. It will.be better to let the professionals to handle it.
In a nutshell, it is more important to focus on school subjects. This is especially true as I am taking O Levels this year.

However,

I have taken a first aid course and is currently first-aid certified. I am able to apply CPR on someone when they are in a emergency. For example when somebody is having a heart attack , i can execute precise actions in order to save him/her. Having been trained by several professionals, I will first check if they are breathing and if their heart is beating. If they are not, I will immediately start chest compressions . By placing my right hand over my left will create a stable base to start his/her heart. While applying chest compressions I will desperately call for anyone nearby to retrieve a AED and call for an ambulance. After attending the course, I am confident in helping others and realise the importance of first aid training. I have learnt to show kindness and patience towards others frequently. If anyone is in need of help I would do my best to tend to them effectively and efficiently.

I feel that the photograph was taken to showcase the importance of having first -aid skills , to attract more people to have interest in participating in similar events. The picture shows a coach instructing the 2 men to her sides on how to properly and safely perform a CPR on the other 2 men lying on the floor. This seems to be taking place in a hall of a community centre judging from the large space that is open for the public.
The foremost reason is to promote similar first-aid events and to spread-awareness about the importance of being equipped with first- aid skills as it is an essential skill to have. Should you be in a situation where you are required to help someone who is injured or harmed , you need to know how to assess the situation and carry out the proper procedures in order to treat the injury and to ease the pain.if you do not have the knowledge and the practical skills, you may likely make the situation worse. Hence, people would not want to be in a situation where he or she is taken aback and helpless. Thus, the would want to participate in a first-aid course activity in order to be well equipped with first aid skills.
I fondly recall a time during secondary 3 , after the circuit breaker ,
. my pe teacher , mr tan, had organised a CPR activity where he brought a dummy model to perform CPR on. He told us that we should push the diaphragm of the body while trying not to break the rib cage of the person . He choose students to come up one by one to perform cpr in front of the class.at first , i was reluctant as I found it embarrassing to do In front of the class and I felt that having the skill of knowing how to perform cpr is useless as that day would highly likely never come. When I was chosen, I had to push down on the diaphragm for 30 times within 60 seconds in order to get the lungs functioning again. After the 60 seconds , I finally

It can also help me in capturing pictures that tell a story, as picture shows a thousand words.

I feel that it is an important skill for me to learn, for a picture that has no story is basically a blank piece of data.
