Quote that stood out to me......

While watching the clip by Annie Kidder, one thing in the video that stood out to me based on personal experiences from myself growing up , as well as seeing my current students, is when she said that “We need to really be careful when we think of the word engagement, we have a tendency to think of parents who are on the school council, or volunteering, to me it’s really important to listen to what all the research says , it’s what you do at home that is the most important for students success” .

his quote from the video really stuck with me because I think it’s true 100% , a lot of educators and teachers tend to say “ that parent is not engaged” but really how would anyone see that? Growing up my parents never volunteered at my school trips, or came to school council meetings but that doesn’t mean they weren’t engaged. At home they were constantly helping me , learning the materials I was learning and very much into my assignments and school work.

Difference in Values

We can’t assume that parents aren’t engaged because we don’t see what goes on at home. After reading the Shared Solutions document , page 12 it talks about factors which contribute to conflict. It explains that conflicts can arise when people have too little or incorrect information , or when they misunderstand information that was supplied to them. As well as the fact that people may have differing values, relating this back to the quote in the clip it’s fair to say that different students come from different backgrounds and families, some families values and beliefs maybe to volunteer inside the school or show face around the school more often, while other values and families may not find that a necessity to prove engagement.

An example of this is in my placement I had a little boy who was from the Muslim background, his family was very religious and his mother (who I say on parent interview night) had a full burka on and was very covered up, after the interview I had shook her hand and said it was great meeting her , she said to me “ I know a lot of parents come with you to the school trips, but my cultural values are different and I don't feel comfortable coming out to trips” This parent however was one of the most engaged parents , I know this because my student did well , his parents were on top of things and I would even receive notes in his agenda etc. This goes to show you that engagement is something that is done at home, it’s the engagement at home that creates success for your child.

References

https://learn.etfo-aq.ca/content/enforced/46817-A3221EI/docs/shared.pdf?_&d2lSessionVal=iynz3v9D5tBdDuomauKzQRgLb&ou=46817
