In the book, Holden was getting to the part in his life where he was thinking about committing suicide. He wanted to jump out of the window so that all his problems would go away, but he didn't do it. Why didn't he do it? Holden probably realized that things would get better and that it's not worth dying over. This song explains the whole scene in only two and a half minutes. The way that Holden was talking about committing suicide was really a cry for help. He just wants someone to help him out but he has no one and that's the part that makes him extremely unhappy. Holden doesn't seem to be the type of person that likes to express his feelings when he is feeling so vulnerable. He doesn't want to show people his weakness.

In the book, Holden talks about his brother, Allie, that died from leukemia. At that point of Holden's life, his life began to spiral out of control. The death of Allie was probably the most emotional pain that Holden has ever experienced. Holden did not want to feel that pain so he decided to hit the garage windows so he could focus the pain on his fists. Holden talks about the good times that he had with Allie. For example, Holden talks about how Allie had a baseball mitt with a bunch of poems on it so when he was out on the field and would become bored, he would start to read them. Holden is glad that he has those memories of his brother.

In the book, Holden was at the museum looking at all of the exhibits and thinks about how they stayed the same all these years. He realizes how he changed so much. He might say that he doesn't like change might maybe he will realize it's for the best.

If you really want to hear about it, my life ain’t that interesting.

In my young years, I got kicked out of one more damn school after Pencey. I was failing math and science. I applied myself more here than when I was at Pencey.

They expected me to clean those damn floors and my hands and knees. I ain’t going to do that even if they offered me an A in one of my class. I ain’t no slave. I refused to do it, so this big hot shot principal, Mr. Smith, called me down to his office.

His office smelled like cigarettes. His breath often reeked of whiskey. Man, was he one old, mean guy. He looked as if he had been decomposing for a few days. If you were to glance at him, he was a damn zombie that had awaken from the dead. He scared me but I wasn't going to let anyone know that.

“ Mr. Caulfield, what is going on with you? You’re failing a couple of classes and now you’re not cooperating, ” said Mr. Smith.

“I ain’t gonna wash no damn floors,” I said.

“You’re gonna have to do things in life that you don’t want to do, but you’re gonna have to do it. ” Today his breath smelled like vodka. I bet you that he puts it in his black coffee so no one could catch him. But damn you could smell it from outside. “ That’s the way life is my boy.”

“I don’t like it one bit,” I said

“I don’t like paying bills and taxes but I still have to do it,” he said. He took a sip of his “coffee” and spilled some on the table when he put it down. That bastard didn’t even clean it up.

I got annoyed and I didn’t want to hear about it anymore so I got up and left. If I would’ve stayed, he probably would’ve kept talking till I was dead. No joke. The next morning, I got a letter from the school saying I got kicked out. It hit me hard but I was glad I didn’t have to go back to that damn place.

To take my mind off things, I took a plane to Paris.

I met this one girl, Hailey. She was beautiful but she only liked to talk about herself. I would start talking about my trip to New York, but she would start talking about how to went to Paris and how she met all kinds of great people. I would try to interrupt her but she would just keep talking her mouth off. But I loved it. I didn’t have to go thinking about my own problems because I heard about everyone else’s crazy lives.

But you know what? I married that girl. We even got us three youngsters too: Harry, Hunter, and Hope. Proudest thing in life is becoming a father. I ain’t the best father but I ain’t no dump either.

We go to the park to go see them ducks in the pond. Never seen kids so happy in my life. Harry likes to give pieces of bread. Hunter likes going on the dock, trying to get a better look of them. And my daughter, Hope, likes to hug my leg and watch both the ducks and her brothers. That smile on her face is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I’m looking at an angel. Sweetest little girl you ever will meet.

I feel bad though. Them kids at school have been pickin’ on her. Those damn kids, pickin’ on my sweet little angel. I bet they never gottin’ a whoopin’. I ain’t given my kids a whoppin’ even if they do something bad, real bad. Hailey thinks I should but I don’t have the guts.

I got this job. I real good job. I’m a mail deliverer for the Post Office. The money pay real good too. It got me walking up to fifteen miles a day. I lost plenty of weight since I started this job. Good thing cause I was getting pretty chubby.

I’ve had to take a few weeks off cause I’ve been feeling depressed. Thinking about my past makes me sad. I should have applied myself more. Ain’t I stupid. I know I can do it. Just gotta put my mind to it. But now I ain’t gonna go back cause I don’t need to go. I sure don’t miss that place though.

I say I’ve changed a lot. More responsible if you wanna say it like that. I ain’t that that little bastard I once was. Good thing I’m not. I’d be somewhere in the dump if I wouldn’t have changed. I ain’t into religion but thank God my life has changed.

After experiencing so much at his young age, he has learned many lessons but still has much more to learn. After getting kicked out of several school, meeting with Sunny, the prostitute, and meeting with the nuns. He has been through an emotional rollercoaster. In the book, he is gradually growing as a person. He still needs to gain the intelligence from what’s right and what’s wrong.

The bottle of alcohol symbolizes the amount of alcohol he has assumed in the bars. He uses his intelligence to persuade the bartenders that he’s old enough to drink even when he’s under age. He also met people at the that made him realize things or even made him even more depressed, when he was there to drink away his own thoughts.

The train ticket symbolizes when he goes to Penn Station to go to New York. It shows that he is feeling alone and needs to go somewhere to feel better.

The sun symbolizes Sunny, the prostitute, that Holden agreed to have over in his room at the hotel. Sunny was a young girl and Holden couldn’t sleep with her because he felt sad for her since it looked like she was throwing her life away to be a prostitute. Holden even says that when she went to the store to buy the dress he was hanging up for her, people wouldn’t know that she was a prostitute because she looked normal and innocent.

The cross symbolizes the nuns that he met while having breakfast. Holden isn’t a religious person but the nuns somehow intrigued him.

The ducks symbolizes the ducks in the lake that he loved to go see. It also intrigued Holden because the ducks always return to the lake just like how people return to their homes.

The Shirley Bean broken record symbolizes the record that Holden bought for Phoebe but he accidentally dropped it and broke it. He was really disappointed because he was so excited to see Phoebe’s reaction when he gave it to her.

The red hunting hat symbolizes that Holden likes to wear throughout the book.
