An example of active listening is rephrasing the tutee's question about a certain topic back to them, after they ask you, and having open body language. Passive- generalized responses, not maintaining eye contact

An example of active listening/responding could be nodding your head and providing positive feedback as your tutee answers questions. An example of passive listening/responding could be avoiding eye contact and giving vague answers.

For example, a tutor who says, “Let’s break it down together,” shows active listening, but saying, “Just keep practicing,” without addressing the issue is passive. Active responding also means giving clear, helpful feedback, not like vague answers without addressing anything or even not related to the issue.

active-- tutee says they're struggling with assignments and don't know where to start, say something that affirms you hear where they are coming from, and ask if they would like to come up with a plan together

If a tutee says, “Today was overwhelming. I had back-to-back classes and I won't have enough time to finish my assignment” an active response might be, “That sounds really frustrating. It must’ve been tough juggling everything. Do you want to talk about what’s left on for your assignment? Maybe you can reach out to the professor or make a study group.” As well as nodding and eye contact to show that you're listening.

A passive response might be, “Yeah, work can be busy,” followed by returning to just asking questions.

Active Listening

A: "I am really stressed about my calculus exam."

B: "Sounds like you’re overwhelmed, have you done the past exams that are posted?"

Active listening is where the listener responds to move the conversation forward. Whereas passive is the listener not engaging and a dead-end conversation.

An example of active responding would be responding to the tutee with an answer or a question that is specific their statement. Keeping eye contact while also having good body language is important in active responding. An example of passive responding would be constantly spacing out and not being mentally present during the session
