Becky from the 1993 film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" portrays many features of self-reliance such as sharing her unique thoughts and perspectives of life as well as traveling every where in America to see new things for her own benefit. Her character is similar to the line "if you would be a man, you would speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls". This simile explains the way she is a free talker with solid opinions

Line from Emerson's essay: "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members."
Line from Muse's "Citizen Erased": "Break me in, teach us to cheat and lie, cover up what shouldn't be shared...For one moment I wish you'd hold your stage with no feelings at all, open minded I'm sure you used to be so free."
Connection: These two lines relate significantly in the way that they both uncover that it is what around us and the things that we must follow that restrain us from speaking from our own minds and being who we actually are.

Logos: "In the attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends him; no invention, no hope." Without the creative, risky minds, revolutionary attributes to the world would never be made. In this instance, efficiency would be frozen in time.
Pathos: "Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world..."
With the solitude of free minds and free reasoning, the peoples of the world, themselves, will also be free. Such as the unseemly thoughts of W.E.B. Debois in his thinking for freedom for African Americans in the United States.
Ethos: "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther..."
Referring to these well known geniuses helps with Emerson's main idea of self-reliance in the way that following independence made these men successful and of credit and many people have benefited from their actions.
