Curbside Pick Up & Feedback to Implement Changes: These two stood out to me the most across multiple examples. The goal of the business is to get product into the hands of customers, and each of these businesses changed HOW they had to do that to serve customers AND to survive during the pandemic. It was great to hear that this is something that will continue. In addition, the examples I heard seek and use feedback from the employees and customer base to make change/additions in their model in order to better serve customers.

There were a lot of COVID examples of businesses utilizing their websites more than before and providing new services to meet safety guidelines and make patrons more comfortable. The coffee shop also utilized the feedback it got from customs and added new aspects such as the chessboard and the storyboard showing where the beans came from. Adding these things makes that environment more welcoming and adds to the experience of visiting that business.

My favorite snip from the videos was James Kelly of FCPL discussing dropping library fines. He shared how he and those he works with reflected on their values and came to the realization that library fines do not mesh with their values. So they dropped them! I think we need to continually reflect on what we value in education. For example, if I value the growth of every child, then my one-size-fits-all approach isn't going to mesh with that value. That reflection can light a fire for personalized learning.

I really liked how Dancing Bear had to transition to having an online option for people to buy items. This is now something that will stay in place and is a great tool for those customers who don't necessarily want to spend time in the store or are on the go. I also loved the FCPL curbside pick up addition. I know it is a tool that our family used through out the pandemic and it was something we really looked forward too.

Well, it seems like now more than ever, business owners have had to really listen to what their customers are saying and try to give them what they want to make them feel happy (whether it's a workout they'll never forget, a cup of coffee along with the story of where that coffee bean came from, a beautiful design in a place that stands out, etc.) Every student and teacher has had to transform their homes into a learning environment to the max capacity, so now that we're being asked to come back into the school building, how can we bring some of those routines from home into the building? When we went all virtual, we had to work together to create a learning environment that had never been created before--but we did it together. When we start the year off next year, I think it's important to have those discussions: What did they enjoy about virtual learning? What did they miss about the physical classroom? What did they learn about themselves as a learner? What supports were the most effective for themselves? We've learned to be flexible, and we've learned that going outside of our comfort zones sometimes creates situations that are far better than we could've ever imagined. Instead of going back into the school year and recreating what we've always created, it's important to remember the point that Brett from Cycle Fit made about being crazy to think that we can actually "recover" and to embrace that business (and schools) have been changed forever.

They allow customers to customize coffee blends, to make suggestions of what to include in the environment of the coffee shop, and they try to allow as must customization as possible for how patrons take their coffee (different milks/creams, sugars and syrups). They also adapted during the pandemic to create online experiences to allow patrons to feel connected to their coffee shop. Dancing Bear did similar, with changing their online model of "basic informational site" to one where customers can interact with the store virtually.

Three of the business that I looked over talked about providing a curbside option to allow customers to still get the items that they wanted. They also changed into putting a focus on an online presence which sounds like even after covid, they would still keep around. Two highlights that I really want to talk about though is first that FCPL expanded its internet service so that community members could sit in their parking lot to connect to the wifi. They took into account what their community groups needed and provided that directly do them, which I am sure will directly affect who visits the library now. Another business, Cycle Fit started working on making the messages during the classes more positive so that when the clients left it wasn't just about getting a workout in and feeling good that way, but also feeling good mentally. In both cases, it was the business meeting a need that supported and builds up those that are visiting their locations.

One area for improvement could just be to continue getting feedback from customers. I think there is a lot that we can carry over from what really was a traumatic and still is for some, experience/time period. But I do think some of the changes that happened to help us during covid, are things that would filter well into any time. For instance the toy store did not have an online presence prior to covid, because they were focused on the in store experience, but they learned through this whole thing that they STILL can give that same experience.
The second thing would be that some of the owners had some negative mindsets about the events that happened and how drastically it changed their business. Yes, it sucked, but it taught us a lot and it taught us that we need to be able to find ways to connect with customers or clients. They need to look at what good came of it, and focus on that.

Based on the companies that I learned about today, people want to feel connections. I learned about Dublin Roasters, Curious Iguana/Dancing Bear, and Matt Long. All three of these business owners understand that the customer experience is what has helped their business grow to what it is today. People want to feel seen and connected with. I think that is important to remember when planning for the future with these businesses. However, like the Curious Iguana video stated, sometimes people do not want a full on conversation about a book. So, you need to find ways to help people in ways they want to be helped.

I can only assume what would work best for them when in the media center, but to get feedback will help me to improve or fix things. The other thing that was mentioned is about creating an experience where the students or "customers" feel valued and supported. So by trying to create lessons where they feel empowered as learners could create a personalized experience.

Individual goal setting I think is a great way for teachers to personalize the learning. When students do not know the "why" behind their learning, they can often times get turned off, and for many different reasons; it is too easy, too hard, and/or because they don't care or see the purpose in learning it. If you give students a goal to reach, and help them navigate the steps to reach that goal, you are giving each student intrinsic motivation to reach that goal. It is theirs and they can take ownership in reaching it. They will also be "seen" once they have reached it, by the teacher. It is important that everyone has moments where they feel successful and special.

We can also keep abreast of trends in our respective content areas as well as our field and make recommendations based on this knowledge. Secondly, that the store is great at incorporating customer suggestions as they fit budget and space (in other words, Serina is great at listening, something else we can do).

For example, The Dancing Bear and Curious Iguana are now continuing to utilize their website for sales as they did during COVID so that they could continue reaching and serving customers. They focused on the experience as well as service.
James Kelly also stood out to me as a "Futurist".

As many have also stated, I believe these businesses need to continue reflecting and analyzing what is and is not working for their customers. This past year made us think more than ever and become creative in ways we never knew we could. I think continued reflection, listening to their customers wants/needs, and also looking at what is or could be best for the company is something that will continue to improve personalization. We have no idea what the next year, let alone 6 months could hold, so this continued reflection process can only help businesses to keep moving forward in the right direction.

Personalizing - J. Grimm

As I stated in a few other responses, James Kelly stood out to me as someone who was a Futurist, who reflects often with his employees, and has his customers at the forefront (as many other business owners did).
I think the ideas of self reflection are SO incredibly critical when personalizing learning for our students. ALL students need self-reflection, it's healthy and refreshing. Being able to step back, and analyze "what didn't work so great and why", and then even possibly "get rid of it" like Kelley did with the library fines. You can also self reflect on what is going well - how are the students learning, are they being successful? Are they taking control? Am I letting them take control?

I also like the idea of keeping the 'customers' or students at the forefront. Yes, we need to keep our teaching style in mind, however, we may need to be flexible in order to enhance our 'customer experience', which again can lead us back to self reflection.

Keeping the idea of being a futurist and looking to the future can also help us to personalize for our kiddos. What's our end goal? What are we hoping to achieve? We truly don't know what the world could hold for us in the next day, so by establishing a reflective, student based model in our classrooms, we are setting ourselves up for success to be flexible and to evolve and change with whatever may come our way.

To enhance personalization, businesses should reflect on how the changes they made this year. What was successful? What can we improve? Many changes brought by the pandemic can still be implemented to benefit the customers and owners. Also, the businesses should continue to ask for feedback from their customers/ employees. This helps customize the experience. Lastly, they should continue to communicate and support other local business owners to create their own network.

I think it is extremely important that they recognize that each person that walks through the door is experiencing their own mental battle. This personalizes the experience and allow people to not only get their mind health but also their body.

I have been to this place several times and I have always loved my times there. The the that impressed me the most about this business is when the owner said she always takes suggestions no matter how big or small they are. She tries to give her customers what they want. I love that!! The pandemic changed so many businesses and this business rose to the challenge by still creating personalized experiences for their customers by having a pick up window, more outdoor seating and the Javalove club. Everything to keep their customers and to make them happy.
