Between the 15th and 17th centuries the Empire of Brunei lived its golden age, extending across the entire island of Borneo and north to the Philippines.
However, due to internal struggles for royal succession, the Brunei Sultanate entered a period of decline, while the influence of European colonial powers in the region grew, contributing to destroy the economic base of Brunei and other neighboring sultanates.
Meanwhile, the British extended control over the territory in 1888, and the country later became a protectorate of the British Government, but under the care of the British in foreign affairs.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the local government rejected pressure to join the Malaysian Federation, whose independence was about to take place. The Sultan of Brunei decides to keep Brunei as an independent state separate from Malaysia.
However, not much is known about the country's early history. At the beginning of the 15th century, Brunei was an independent kingdom. In the 16th century, it controlled almost the entire island of Borneo. In 1959, Brunei gained partial independence.
