This states that Mr. Freeman is not in the story JUST as an art teacher, but he's in there to show Melinda freedom, or to "find the wind". He is helping her find more about herself by assigning her the tree project. When he saw Melinda walking in the cold he offered her a ride and it was a little out of his way and she was grateful for that. Mr. Freeman said "'You're a good kid. I think you have a lot to say.
