Egypt's religion was drastically changed under King Akhenaten, who ruled from 1353 to 1336 BCE, to worship only one god, Aten, who is symbolised by the sun disk. He relocated Thebes' capital to Akhetaten, a new city he founded that is now known as Amarna. During his rule, realistic and individualised artistic and cultural trends prevailed, frequently featuring the royal family in informal, everyday settings. Following Akhenaten's death, his famous son Tutankhamun and other kings reverted to the ancient religious practices, essentially undoing the changes made by the former, reestablishing the worship of Egypt's numerous gods and erasing Akhenaten's name from numerous monuments and documents.
