The first five years of primary school in Brazil are similar to those in Russia. All subjects are taught by one teacher, who is also a class teacher. Then the division by subject begins. There are subjects such as biology, history, geography, physics, chemistry, Portuguese language and literature, and English.
The last three years of study are called "secondary education". The program depends on the student's further goal. Only a few people manage to enter immediately after graduation, as the exam is really difficult. There are special commercial intensive courses in which, within four months, they prepare directly for passing the exam at a certain university. The percentage of admission after their completion is quite high. It is cheaper for parents to pay for these courses than to send their child to a commercial university, where the cost of education is very high.
Most applicants immediately set up for failure and repeated retake, which does not necessarily have to wait a whole year. In many universities, the entrance exam is held twice, in summer and in winter. In Brazil, there is no single, fixed start date for the school year. Schools open their doors after the summer holidays in mid-February. In universities, the first semester can start both in early March and in the second half of it.
The most prestigious universities in the country are the University of Sao Paulo, which is ranked 115th in the world university rankings for 2021 (according to QS World University Rankings).
