Water pollution has always been a problem in Myrtle Beach. In recent summers, the oceans have been closed for high counts of bacteria. This bacteria is present due to the rainwater runoff being directed into the oceans. SC Department of Health and Environmental Center states, "The most common recreational water illnesses are gastrointestinal and may cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain or fever. hese illnesses result from swallowing water contaminated by disease-causing organisms. Contact with contaminated water can also cause upper respiratory, and wound infections. Young children, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system are particularly vulnerable to recreational water illnesses."

There are economic costs, social costs and environmental costs to Myrtle Beach's water pollution problem. In the past couple of years, SCDHEC has spent nearly $11 million of Myrtle Beach residents increasing water bills on a Ocean Outfall Project. This project is hurting the Myrtle Beach residents economically and will only become worse in the future. Myrtle Beach is also one of the top tourist destinations so if the beaches here have increased amount of bacteria and are closed for safety reasons, then the tourism rate in Myrtle Beach will begin to drop. The environment is also being harmed because the aquatic life is being disrupted and destroyed by the pollution in the ocean from the rainwater runoff.

How is the Issue Connected to Poverty?

People of poverty typically live in areas that have large amount of water pollution. Water pollution is connected to poverty, while poverty can be connected to water pollution. People who are in poverty can be desperate for jobs even if that job means dumping chemicals into the ocean or building more systems to allow rainwater runoff to be deposited into the ocean. By working for these companies, people who live in poverty are contributing to the rising pollution problem.

What Helpful Action can your Viewers Take?

A helpful action that I hope my viewers take away is that they become more educated about the water pollution issues around them where ever they live. Simply dumping a half drank soda into a pond can contaminate the area and become an environmental cost. People should also think about the economic, social and environmental effects of their actions before doing anything that could possibly harm the water around them.
