Apartheid was created due to the white supremacy that braced South Africa throughout a period before it was installed. Apartheid was a system of legislation that enforced racial policy. It existed for a period of approximately fifty years, in and out of the proximity of South Africa. Due to the start of apartheid, the opposition created an organization named ANC, or African National Congress, in order to find a platform for their voices to be heard. Mandela worked closely with this organization, and the president that eventually repealed this act, which led to the Nobel Peace Prize both later received for their efforts.

Apartheid was appealed by the government of President F.W. de Klerk, where the legislation was eventually silenced. The call to have the apartheid silenced was finally heard through an outburst among a group of African children in a township outside of Johannesburg that became severe enough that tear gas and such forth was involved. The demonstration drew international attention to South Africa in light of the tension. Henceforth, in 1985, the United Kingdom and the United States presented an embargo on trade and travel sanctions.

The legislation regarding white prejudice and segregation was met with extreme opposition. The forms of opposition began in non-violent, peaceful protest and were eventually met with armed resistance. The South Indian National Congress and ANC met for a mass congregation in 1952 which was to be a meeting of forces where they burned their passes and such forth. The imprisonment of Mandela from the period of 1963 to 1990 drew extensive support to the anti-apartheid movement.

In 1961, he was arrested for treason and was then acquited. However, he was arrested again for illegally leaving the country in 1962. Mandela was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. Then, in 1964 he was put on trial on charges of sabotage and conspiring to overthrow the state and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. With growing domestic and international pressure, and fears of a racial civil war, President F. W. de Klerk released him in 1990. Mandela then led the African National Congress in its negotiations with the minority government for an end to apartheid and the establishment of a multiracial government.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, into a royal family of the Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe in the South African village of Mvezo, where his father served as chief. After the death of his father in 1927, 9-year-old Mandela was adopted by Jongintaba Dalindyebo, a high-ranking Thembu regent who began grooming Mandela for a role within the tribal leadership. The first in his family to receive a formal education, Mandela completed his primary studies at a local missionary school. He went on to attend the Clarkebury Boarding Institute and Healdtown, a Methodist secondary school, where he excelled in boxing and track as well as academics. In 1939 Mandela entered the elite University of Fort Hare, the only Western-style higher learning institute for South African blacks at the time. The following year, he and several other students, including his friend and future business partner Oliver Tambo were sent home for participating in a boycott against university policies. After learning that his guardian had arranged a marriage for him, Mandela fled to Johannesburg where he studied law at the University of Witwatersrand. He became involved in the movement against racial discrimination and forged key relationships with black and white activists.
