The oratory is a small basilica and a place of pilgrimage for Canadian Catholics. About two million people visit St. Joseph's oratory each year, and its auditorium can accommodate 10,000 parishioners at a time. There are 278 steps leading up to the temple's entrance, which pilgrims traverse on their knees. In the building is also a museum of Monk Andre and the museum of the Oratory. There is a beautiful garden around the temple. The dome of the basilica was created in 1937-1939 by Father Paul Bello, a Benedictine architect, and was the third largest dome of its type in the world (after the Basilica of Our Lady of Yamoussoukro in Côte d'Ivoire and St. Peter's Church in Rome). Lenox combined the wealth and luxury of the North American Gilded Age and architectural styles such as Norman and Gothic in his design. This entire complex is connected to the subway, allowing you to travel to almost anywhere in the center without having to reach the surface. It is all permeated by a network of countless narrow corridors filled with small restaurants and stores. It is these that connect the many shopping centers of the Underground City.
During the day, it's relatively safe, as many shoppers and security guards keep crime to a minimum. But at night, the Underground City becomes the domain of the Sabbath. Most tunnels and corridors are poorly lit and barely patrolled. From the shadows, screams and strange noises are not uncommon. The Covenanites happily "play" with unsuspecting customers and employees. Cainites play violent versions of cat-and-mouse, usually ending in the bloody deaths of mortals.
