An opposite, a worse side (a constant theme in 'US'). We are introduced to Josh from the eyes of the Wilson family after they meet up with them at the beach the Wilson's seem to have known the Tyler's for a while. Josh seems to be a guy that is lazy and worried about himself more than other that being said he does care for his family. Josh and his family represents what could have happened to the Wilson's had they not been so lucky.

Josh's Clothing reflects his wealth and his laziness Josh is killed off about halfway through the movie and him and his family represent the fact that the Wilson's could have easily been them and the Wilson's were lucky (because they all survived while all the Tyler's were killed (with the exception of Red)) 

Josh is a pretty lazy character and he is a stereotypical young white male that has a lot of money as it is evident that he spends most of his money on comfort and pleasure rather than doing something smart with the money. He is attached to his possessions namely his boat and car although he does care for his family he and Kitty have a few squabbles he seems to care for his possessions even more.

It is believed that the name Kitty was inspired by Catherine Genovese (Kitty Genovese) who was stabbed in New York and her cries for help were ignored and misheard by people nearby.
