What is the Traditional Use?

The traditional use of evening primrose by Indigenous people was to heal both bruises and wounds. It would be used in 3 ways. They would extract oil from the flower and apply it to the bruise/wound. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) stops inflammation and quickens the healing process. The next step is crushing the leaves and applying them to the skin, slowing the swelling and quickening the recovery. The last way is by internal use. It is used by either making pills, drinking the oil, or consuming powder made from the leaves and seeds. It was consumed with food usually as well. Using the evening primrose internally helped improve overall skin health.
