The Impressionist painters used lots of layers of colours, leaving gaps in the top layers to reveal the colours underneath. The technique is achieved through hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, drybrushing, and sgraffito. Also they would leave the first layer of paint and just keep on adding lots of thick paint to create more of a texture on the surface.
