At the start of Chapter 3, we find out that Victor's mom dies from a fever, but in her last moments she wishes that him and Elizabeth get together and start a family, as well as Victor attending Ingolstadt University. Throughout Chapter 4, Victor talks about how much he adores the atmosphere and education provided to him by the school. This led him to become fascinated by human anatomy and later on led him to create his new creation. Since this novel takes place in 1798, no cars existed and far journeys took days or even months to finish. In my understanding, I believe it would've took Victor more than 15 days to reach Ingolstadt from Geneva.

Engrossed in a culture where bio-organic threats and the lack of cures surely lay worrisome on a family, especially when one member dies, causing an existential dread that permeates throughout the minds of the family- this is how I imagine Frankenstein to feel, especially with an overbearing worried-feeling of excitement that may be on top of him in moving to a different country. The distance (according to Google, ~657km) would've taken quite a while to travel with still pretechnological forms of transportation. According to my calculations, with the average walking speed being about 5.1km/h would take around 129 hours or around 5 days non-stop or around 7 days total (with 6 hours of sleep) to get to Ingolstadt by foot.

The death of Victor's mother, in conjunction with his father's advice and his fascination with the human anatomy, provide an exigence for Victor to travel to Ingolstadt University to expand upon his educational prowess. While such an ideal pertains to Victor and holds interest in his mind, it becomes apparent that he feels a sentiment of melancholy because he has to leave his family and Elizabeth behind. Such a mixed plethora of emotions may feel somewhat overwhelming for an individual like Victor. Given that this story takes place in 1798, a period deprived of contemporary transportation methods, whether he traveled on foot or by carriage, I would estimate that the total travel time to Ingolstadt, Germany, would last about 8-10 days.

The first chapters show the background story as to how Victor came to be with his fascination and his career. We see the emotional rollercoasters that Victor goes through with the death of him mother and how that has a great impact on his next life endeavors. It is seen what Victors mother wishes him to persue for himself. His being to make a family of his own with his significant other but to also follow through with his education. As we see that Victor does just that and makes a journey to the university in Ingolstadt it is presumed that due to the year and lack of possible transpiration its an estimated week and a half to make it from his home town to his new location

Considering the stress of Elizabeth’s sickness and his mother’s death, Victor was already feeling overwhelmed before his departure. Moving away from family for the first time is a scary experience, and being in the process of grieving does not help Victor much. The distance between his hometown and Ingolstadt is 409 miles, which is not a long distance to travel today. However, because this took place during the 1700s, the method of travel at the time was either walking or horse carriage. Since his family is wealthy, Victor likely took a horse carriage, though he still would have had to travel for more than 2 weeks at minimum to get to Ingolstadt.
