I found this talk about the Kave 360 Project very interesting, it was all about turning events and performances into immersive virtual reality experiences. In their manifesto, they describe wanting to make an impact on climate change through design "compelling experiences are designed to inform and inspire changes in human behaviour manifesting a meaningful Climate Emergency response." this massively relates to this recurring theme of designers using creativity and new technology to make a positive change on the world.

Here is a slide in the talk showing the huge demand for VR experiences, the concept is becoming very popular within the creative industry and beyond spanning all over the world. This shows just how fast the tech industry is merging with the creative industries to introduce VR and AR into the mainstream and how successful it has been so far. This makes me more aware of the prevalence of new technology being used in design and how I need to be more educated on it to keep up with the fast-moving feild.

I asked a question for the WGSN employees in the chat. I asked them if they could give an example of a trend that they are forecasting at the moment. One of the women Hewan Franchi tried to answer but it wasn't very clear and went on a spiel but she ended up just saying that 'extreme optimism' will be a big trend due to the effects of the pandemic. I am not sure if the long and vague answer was because they are quite gate keeping and secretive in the trend forecasting industry or because she didn't really have an answer for it and wasn't the best at forecasting?

Here is a case study that creative conscience presented to us at the talk. Chrissy talked about a project that was made to fight hysteria and fear-mongering during the pandemic. She spoke about how the general media is very toxic and causes mass anxiety and other mental health issues especially regarding the Covid-19 disease. The media projected the death toll to the world daily, But what a designer noticed was that we never saw the recovery figures ,they hacked the daily figures of recovery rates from people who had Covid and survived. They broadcasted this all over the world on big screens for example Times Square. This was to help people who were made to fear the disease so much that they either became recluses or neglected their own health and missed crucial hospital appointments that could have saved their lives. This case study shows how designers who rebelled against the harmful media gave hope to humanity in such dire times, easing mass panic caused by fear-mongering. This case was especially insightful for me as I am currently writing an essay on whether advertising has helped (by educating and informing) or harmed (fear-mongering and misinformation) in the pandemic.

I found this zoom really helpful to me because I have never fully grasped the concept of what data is. I now understand that data is series of facts and figures that can be processed into viable information. I was happy to be in this class as I got to learn all about data and how to gather it myself but I was left wondering how I could use it in my course/career path. David then mentioned that data could be collected on advertising itself for example signage. This opened my eyes to the fact that data can be collected on everything and more importantly it can be used along side my course (Advertising and Brand Design)

A blog listing all the important ways design can change the world such as making the world more Accessible and Sustainable.

"Designers manipulate various media types such as typography, illustration, photography, etc., to create visual representations of ideas & messages. These messages then find their way into the masses, in printed media such as books, advertising, websites, television, movies, product packaging, signage, social media & much more."

"The media has an enormous impact on us. It shapes what we see & how we understand the world as well as how we see ourselves & others."

These two quotes I took from the article made me realise that as designers, in a way, we ARE the media. The same media that is seen as toxic and manipulative. Because we are such a big part of media we DO have the ability to change the narrative and the negative culture.

The Create change talk was my favorite of the whole week and it was really stirring and encouraging. I find it so inspiring to know there is an outlet for creative people and designers to try and save the world in a sense whether that is regarding global warming or mental health crisis, it's more than just designing for a brand or company it is designing for humanity. I feel really inclined to have a go myself in the future and I have looked at myself as a designer in a different light, it makes me more proud of the industry I have chosen to be in.

The Creative Conscience award briefs are a list of topics you can choose to create a solution for. These briefs give you a chance to create a real impact on the world 'STOP negative and START positive'. I have heard of the D&AD awards but I haven't really heard of the Creative Conscience awards before the talk with them on Thursday.

Ted talk on how design has the ability to change the world:

'Designers play a substantial role in the creation of useless products and the dissemination of senseless concepts. Nowadays Communication-related items are changing both interpersonal behavior and society as a whole. But the things we design or use have no signification without the persons they are related to. Communication designers could make a difference and promote the invention of socially meaningful structures.'

Designer Micheal Bierut explains how design can change the world through his book showcasing projects that he has personally learned something from. His book is something he wishes he had when growing up, something his younger self would have found and been inspired by. He talks about being so grateful that he gets to do something that he wanted to do since he was a child and still has so much fun doing it.

I think its nice that he relates the notion of changing the world through design with his younger self because most children always want to be heroes and save the world through being an astronaut etc, it would be a good thing for kids to know that they can change the world by being a designer too.

This ted talk covers how design should be thought of as a super power, it can be used to build but it can also be used to destroy. For example you could design an amazing sustainable new technology or you could design a plastic wasteful product which contributes to global warming. Its' all up to you and what impact you want to have on the world.

'A call to action to all designers who are uniquely positioned to make a meaningful difference in todays world. Design should be thought of as a "super power" and it is time we take responsibility for the things we create. With our digital well-being at risk, designers have the privilege and the burden of wielding more power and influence than ever before.'

After the creative conscience talk I have been inspired on a new level. It really opened my eyes to how I can actually make a change through my chosen profession. Ive always thought of the concept of 'changing the world' but I've had massive doubts and reservations about it. When I would watch an advert on television of people doing a call for action pleading for us to cut down on this or that I would think that won't make a difference everything comes from the top, ask fast fashion brands to cut own on production don't ask little me to swap out meat for vegetables to help climate change, I saw myself as a drop in the ocean. But now I think about my role and abilities and realise advertising IS the media, design IS everything. I now realise that my career is such bigger than making things look great and selling a product it can be used to build a better future and save the world.
