This is historically a very important event that took place in history as we know it today. However, with Robbie in the war and the setting being placed in Dunkirk, we can see the brutality of war and how it affects a person.

This completely differs from how the events actually took place in reality. This later leads to Robbie's arrest as he was accused of raping Cecilia. However, we will never know if this was the case as Cecilia and Robbie were never reunited before they died. 

This makes us as the readers think about what the truth really is. This also makes us believe that there is no absolute truth and that the only truth is the one we believe and assume.

This can also be seen in the letter that was written to Cecilia by Robbie that he had no attention to sending and was found by Briony.

The epilogue in Atonement can be seen as a piece of metafiction. This is because the illusion that was created in Parts 1-3 is destroyed as it is peened by Briony.

One way of showing the element of metafiction is when Briony receives her rejection letter from C.C she is told to read the first part of her novella again. This refers back to the events that happened that Briony fictionalized and wanted to do this even more.

1. Fiction metafiction can be seen as the book as a whole and how it is written and portrayed in the book. It can also be seen as the elements of imagery in the book. Which is fictional elements.

2. Truth metafiction: This is the general idea of how truthful pieces of fiction can be or how it can be portrayed truthfully.

3. Crucial metafiction: This is the most important elements in a novel and how it is portrayed in the novel. Hence the name it plays an important part in the turn of events in a novel.
