1950s mood board

1950s fashion was defined by women having tiny waists, and big voluminous skirts as well as casual yet formal and elegant clothing. A lot of the clothing had simple and floral prints to contrast the plain design and softer shoulders. Everything was very elegant and simple, but everything smart was also casual.

1980s mood board

Fashion in the 80s was very bright and bold, lots of pieces were activewear being aerobics and spandex. A lot of the clothes consisted of white, pink, blue, red and yellow because they stand out the most and are commonly known as neon, which was the trend of the eighties.

Something I liked about seeing La Boheme is the stage design, I loved how they used the same things in different ways, the shops that people were shopping in also became houses down a street and everything moved very smoothly.

Es Devlin mood board

I like Es Devlin's stage design because some of them like the playing cards is so unusual and intricate, but a very simple idea of someone shuffling cards. I like the use of colour in some of her works, for example one piece will be in complete black and white whereas others will be in full neon colours and I like how she can do both and experiments with different things instead of just sticking to what she knows.

David Hockney mood board

Some of David Hockney's stage designs are very detailed like the living room from the 50s, lots of detail is 2D and he only has the main parts in 3D; for example all the photos on the back wall are printed on which also saves resources and the risk of things getting broken or falling when changing scenery. However a lot of his work is also very simple but has a lot of dimension and shadows to compliment it.

These are the photos that I took from the Royal Opera House trip, I liked how when leaving the theatre there were lots of pictures of other plays that had been shown there and lots of miniature sets to take pictures of. The theatre itself was very impressive and I didn't expect it to be as grand as it was, but i also liked how inclusive the play was to have subtitles and sign language impersonator, because of this the opera was very easy to follow.

This was my first bit of experimentation with layering photos for tis project, tried to make the whole image grainy so that it fits the eighties theme.

Final piece

Overall i am happy with my final piece because it does look how i imagined, and it shows that it’s a ballet. If i were to do this again i would take more time on the background to give it more of a disco feel and also try to include some other 80s things to really pull it together. I chose this font because i liked how informal it was and how it matches the feel of the poster, i’d also like to add more detail on the ballet slippers. To make this i reused the disco ball i had drawn for my first piece and layered all my images together and drew the legs and ballet shoes.

These were the layers i used, i tried to make sure i did every detail in another layer so that if i didn’t like something it could be easily changed and made to fit better.

This was my first attempt at a final piece, the idea was to make a poster for a disco but as i was drawing all the layers separately i wasn’t aware how blurry the lines would become on the ballerina. I liked the original idea behind it but i am happy i decided to change plans, because i dont think the colours blend in together and it all looks very messy.
