Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is extraordinarily high and growing over time. World Health Organization (WHO) stated that More than 264 million people suffer from depression worldwide, and depression is the leading cause of disability globally. This situation is hazardous as people with symptoms of MDD are severe enough to interfere with their daily activities. It might also influence their relationship with people. Without we notice, there must be anyone surrounding us who has depression that can cause problems in their life.

Firstly, caregivers should offer to accompany their loved ones to the next appointment. We need to understand that depression seldom gets better without treatment, and it can actually worsen over time. Research from the University of Pennsylvania shows that both antidepressant medications and cognitive therapy are effective in reducing the symptoms.

By offering and reminding their loved ones about the treatment, caregivers can encourage them to continue treatment. They can continually update the personal doctor about their loved one condition, whether he or she took medication or not according to the schedule. They also should remind their loved ones to do their counselling homework or light therapy treatment every morning.

I want to share my experience with you all regarding my friend who has Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Her family is very supportive because they always remind her to take medication every day. Even though she is diagnosed for having MDD, she is very cheerful. Because of her bright personality, I realize that society's stigma, saying MDD patients have aggressive behaviour is totally wrong.

Furthermore, people should always show their concern towards the neighbourhood by asking someone with MDD if that person needs any help with the daily task. For example, they can provide a ride to the workplace, help grocery shopping, or offer help around the house. Someone with depression can make everyday tasks, like driving and grocery shopping, feel impossible. This problem is because they experience many difficult emotions such as helplessness, frustration, and sadness. These feelings are all normal. By helping them with daily tasks, it can light their burden in facing daily routine.

Lastly, caregivers and friends should listen passionately to their loved ones' overwhelming feelings and problems. Their depression is not for us to fix, but being present and listening to our loved one's talk can help them feel heard. They also will realize that there is someone beside them who wants to support them. There is some phrases that we can use to comfort someone with MDD while listening to their problem such as:

· I am here for you

· You’re not alone in this

· I might not understand exactly how you feel right now, but I want to help you

· Tell me what I can do to help

Besides, we also should avoid using these kinds of phrases:

· This is just a phase; it will pass

· Everyone feels this way sometimes

· Why can’t you see the positive?

· Snap out of it

· The more you think about it, the worse you will feel

· Think about all the great things in your life!

Sometimes, sitting in silence and use nonverbal action to communicate support is more helpful than trying to find the perfect words.
