As an industry

Some beekeepers use their bees as a source of profit. For example, they can sell honey or beeswax so they can make some money. They can sell this honey or beeswax to farmers, bakers, or any food industry. Bakers can use this honey in their pastry's, or baked goods. Farmers can use the bees to pollinate their crops so they can make food. Commercial beekeeping helps these beekeepers get the honey from the bees easier. This use is called a modern hive. Modern hives are basically hives with movable boards and boxes for convenience of the bees and the beekeepers as well as using standard hive for the hardworking bees. The standard hives provide space so the bees can go in and out creating the hive as well as the honeycombs. While collecting the honey from the bees, the beekeepers have to wear protective wear because if they don't they could get stung. Beekeepers wear gloves, jumpsuits, and wired masks to protect them from being stung. In 2006, people reported that there were less and less bees around where they live. This affects beekeepers because it could be taking away there job because some people make their money off of honey.

How does beekeeping as an industry relate to the novel "STUNG"?

This relates to Stung because in the book, people sell the honey for money and for making deals with other people. For example, in the book if you have a certain amount of honey, you can live inside the peaceful wall. Nowadays, you can sell honey and beeswax to get money, or a deal, just like in the book.

Also, in the book, there has been a disappearance of the bees. In real life, there have been less and less bees because people have been using a lot of pesticides to kill the bees and other insects. If you think about it, without bees you could not eat most of the foods that you want to because bees pollinate the flowers and crops which animals eat. For example, cows eat flowers which make them bigger and more nutritious for us. Cows are used for meat which plays a big part in our food system.

First step of beekeeping is to order the bees. It is important to order the bees because it is very hard to just go into the woods and find a random hive of bees. Also ordering the bees is definitely more convenient than finding the bees on your own. Buying the bees also guarantees you some bees to work with so you can make some money and some honey.

The second step of the beekeeping process is to choose the hive system that works best for you and the bees. Before beekeepers choose their hive system, they look at how many bees they've ordered. One of the most common types of hives is the Langstroth hive. This hive consists of movable drawers that are stacked on top of each other. This method of beekeeping is very convenient because it is accessible at any time. A second common used hive is the top-bar hive. This hive is made of bars and a horizontal base so the bees can have enough room to make their hives.

Step three of this process is collecting your supplies. For example you might need protective wear, feeding supplies, and wooden boxes to make your hive. The fourth step is to actually put your gear on. You might think that you do not need this gear, but you really do. If you make a swift and fast movement, bees could sting you. And trust me it would hurt. The suits have a wire mask, jumpsuit, and gloves to protect all of your body parts. The final step of this process is to keep your bees healthy and happy. It is important to keep them happy and healthy because when bees are happy, they work well with the Queen Bee and other worker bees. When bees are healthy, they can produce good honey and they will pollinate better.

Pollination is the process where bees carry pollen to one flower to another in order for plants to grow and create offspring's. In this process, bees are known as pollinators. Pollinators pollinate the flowers. Some examples include, the wind, insects, water, and birds to name a few. Pollination is very important because without pollination, we could not have most of the foods we need to survive. Animals eat flowers, which are pollinated by bees. If the flowers are not able to make an offspring, the animals die because they have lost one of their sources of food. How many times have you eaten a hamburger? A lot right. Well, the cows eat the flowers which give them the energy and nutrition that they need and then one they are big enough, we eat them!

Before it turns into honey, nectar is sipped from flowers that bees pollinate. After the bees sip all the nectar that they need, bees take the nectar and carry into the hive so the worker bees can work on it. How does the nectar become honey? Well, the worker bees somehow evaporate all of the water out of the nectar, until it becomes sticky honey. The bees work extremely hard to make this honey so that the can please their Queen. They create the honey by regurgitating the nectar over and over again until is is sticky and sweet. After the bees make this honey they store the food in honeycombs for the winter when it is harder to get the nectar from plants.
