During the first part of JFK's speech he makes it known to recognize the important people that are keeping the world together and this country as one. He talks about the torch being passed down to a new generation to say pretty much that They are the new and out with the old they want a restart and to improve the generation they are in now. Saying the torch has passed is basically saying the US has the power to control our own future. We can either become great or be destroyed and as with the new generation we will teach them the good to learn from us and keep the world at peace and spread the ideas of freedom not Communism.
