According to the qualitative map in the textbook(pg125) Midwest is in the junction between the semiarid region and the humid continental region due to it's vast area of land. The vegetation in the Midwest should be grassland (according to the qualitative map). However, as the "Richest farming land in the world" and also the major agriculture region in the whole US, land made it possible for farmers to produce abundant harvests of grain and cereal crops, including corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, and barley, which replaced the vegetation that should be in the place. For example, most of the food in the supermarket was made of the corns that produced in the state if Iowa.

Nevertheless, with the rapid city sprawl, and without thinking the consequences, Los Angeles were stricken with pollution and other issues. air pollution, inadequate water supplies, and water pollution, theses are the factors that Los Angeles are facing or faced recently. In order to decrease the tailpipe pollution(it caused the air pollution), Los Angeles government set a target goal of 5 million electric vehicles by 2030. Water pollution was caused by the god rush, which lots of mercury was left in the river system. In the 1960s-1970s, government passed the regulation to control the water quality.

Until today, 775,000 square Kilometer of the rainforest have disappeared because people chopped off trees in the Amazon region either to graze and plant crops or drill for petroleum, gas, and minerals. Ironically, everything that destroyed the rainforest for profit was facilitated by the Trans-Amazon highway built-in 1970. Worse still, deforestation in the Amazon region would cause a series of wildfires. And the wildfire not only destroyed more forests but also contaminated the air and water. Hence, people in the city like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and several others are facing serious health problems.

The Cold War refers to the political, economic, and military struggles between the capitalist camp dominated by the United States and the socialist camp dominated by the Soviet Union between 1947 and 1991.
At that time, the United States and the Soviet Union were both "superpowers" in the world. In order to fight for world hegemony, the two countries and their allies have waged decades of struggle. During this period, although differences and conflicts were serious, both sides tried their best to avoid the outbreak of a large-scale worldwide war (World War III). The confrontation usually involves local proxy wars, technology and arms races, space races, diplomatic competitions, etc. It was carried out in a "cold" manner, that is, "mutual containment and no force", so it is called the "cold war."
The two major military blocs are equal in strength, and neither dare to easily use force to end the opponent's fight for world hegemony. Both countries have stockpiled a large number of nuclear warheads and mutually assured each other of destruction.

Somalia was on the brink of famine in 2017. Sequential seasons of reduced rainfall, low harvests, and dying livestock exposed the country to famine from drought, compounding decades of climatic shocks and conflict. In 2016, drought had left 40% of Somalia’s population food insecure and on the brink of famine. By 2017, acute hunger had struck 6.3 million people across the country, contributing to widespread displacement and a health crisis. Climate change and increasing disaster risks further jeopardized lives, livelihoods, and Somalia’s already underdeveloped economy. Completed in January 2018, the Drought Impact Needs Assessment found that there had been over three billion dollars in damages or losses due to the drought. Multi-sectoral recovery and resilience building needs were estimated at nearly $1.8 billion.
