Participating students in this seminar learn about the traditions, theories and practices of including the arts as a part of social science inquiry.  Specifically, we have reviewed the ways in which the visual, literary, and performing arts have been included in connection to educational inquiry as data, analysis, and/or representation of findings.  We have discussed the increased presence of artistic practices in social science inquiry and the increased presence of data and research in art-making.  The premise of this Arts-Based Research course has been that the more researchers and artists can turn to one another for inspiration as well as for new, creative tools to answer ongoing social questions, the richer our understandings can be! Students in this course have read chapters from Cahnmann-Taylor and Siegesmund's (2018) book, Arts-Based Research in Education: Foundations for Practice (second edition) as well as chapters from the first 2008 edition as well as numerous other books, articles, and websites to inform the possibilities for scholartistry for 2020 and beyond.  Projects on this padlet represent studies in both seedling and full bloom stages, from students in their first or last semesters of study in graduate programs.  Despite unprecedented challenges during Fall 2020, these participating students exceeded every expectation in this course that required rigorous reading for weekly class participation, creative new projects, and "citizenship" through the publication of book reviews regarding new arts-based inquiries.  Thank you for celebrating these many accomplishments with us on this page.
