What is a Single Story?

Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi. “The danger of a single story.” A single story mainly referred to one person’s view on someone’s country. A Euro-centrism outlook on the Caribbean at the time of Slavery can display this. Where the Europeans lied and misrepresented the native people. Columbus said they were cannibals, had hospitable prostitution, were savages and many more.  Although the Native people weren’t advance as the Europeans, they lived in the Caribbean for over 5000 years before the arrival of Columbus. Yet still the Native people were perceived as the enemy and stereotyped as these barbarians who need to be stopped. The discovery of the Paleo Indians 7000 YBP, Meso Indians 3000 YBP and the Neo Indians, who were not just the Carib’s and Arawak’s weren’t yet fully discovery up to this day because the Europeans destroyed their relics and their way of life.
      A single story can be seen in today society, where in America and other countries especially in the Caribbean, Muslim people are stereotyped and prejudice as terrorist since the 9/11 attack in the USA. This is mainly because ISIS has Muslim followers, ISIS has made such an impact on the world that all Muslims are now stereotyped as Terrorist. If they follow a certain religion, they should not be discriminate against it because of the acts of others  within the religion. Religious persecution was also shown in slavery time, when Europeans would convert Native Indians, Africans, East Indians and Chines into Catholicism.

    The CARICOM agreement was signed on July 4th, 1973 at Chaguaramas in Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados were signatories to the treaty. CARICOM officially began on August 1st, 1973 where other countries such as Antigua, Bahamas, Belize and other Caribbean states joined forming fifteen Caribbean nations within the organization. CARICOM’s main objectives are to improve economic development within free trade, Cooperation and common policies to deal with none member states. The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) involves two main parts, Single Market and Single Economic. The single market involves free movement of CARICOM nationals to other states within the Caribbean, free movement of foods with no tax, quotas and agreement from one country to the next and free movement of capital. Why is CARICOM important to Caribbean countries? CARICOM helps in promoting a stable economy, tackles globalization and meg-trading blocs. CARICOM helps by also giving the smaller countries a voice to promote economic integration among members. Caribbean countries are near each other, they share a similar culture example dress, food, speaking and music, they face similar challenges such as natural disasters, money management and many more compared to larger countries. CARICOM helps the Caribbean by allowing them to have an opinion in the trials and tribulations to come.

  The Europeans were in search of the three G’s, Gold, God and Glory. They came in the Caribbean in search of new land and on contact with the islands and the Neo Indians who inhabited it, the Europeans enslaved, over worked, abuse and slaughtered the native people. This led to the first African diaspora, followed by the white labours from Ireland, Whales and England who were kidnapped or came under contract. After the Europeans brought the second African diaspora followed by the indenture labours who were the first Indian diaspora, Chinese, Portuguese and lastly the second Indian diaspora.
        In my opinion, this was mainly because the Europeans wanted gold and power. They used and abuse the Neo Indians by raping the women, giving them diseases, over working them, enslaving them and murdering the natives. The Europeans left their civilization with nothing, but a misrepresented name and they even destroyed their relics and way of life. Why were they so cruel? Was it because gold and land were that important, they had to destroy an entire civilization and leave others in shambles just to prove who had more power. At the end of it all the Europeans were the ones who got a bad name. They enslaved, destroyed tribes and colonies and massacre the innocent.

Caribbean civilization has been an interesting topic for me. I personally enjoy learning about history and where we come from because the Caribbean is not only one culture. We are diverse in so many ways and each one of us have a unique back story to how our ancestors came to the Caribbean. One topic I enjoyed learning was the Caribbean demographic diversity. The Caribbean is so unique in its culture and it taught us about the different types of people that resided in the Caribbean at slavery time. Although I personally knew how Columbus misrepresented the Caribbean from history classes. I didn’t know it had white labours and second diaspora of both Africans and East Indians labours. By far I really enjoyed learning about the different tribes, culture, history and other things that’s was shown to us throughout the topic and I really do hope to inform and educate members of my family and friends about the topics I learned in Caribbean Civilization. One thing I didn’t like was the online class, but I did enjoy participating in my face to face tutorials and interacting with different members of the University because Caribbean civilization had many students from different facilities. I would personally suggest, If there’s anything Caribbean civilization needs to upgrade in is the lecturers. The online classes were hard and tedious to log onto and when I did get to log on the lecture, it was almost over. Forcing me to wait a few days to then download it. Overall, I did enjoy Caribbean civilization, the book and lectures were very informative and taught me a great deal of thing.
