Warm Up: Introduction to Word & World by

I've posted some quotations from the Introduction to Word and World. Comment on the quotations, providing your own thoughts or opinions, additional information, questions that you think of when you read the quotation, or any other ideas that occur to you. You may also reply to other students' posts. The purpose of this task is to start us in thinking about the big picture of how language influences us, and how we use language to influence others.

This is a warm up activity, so don't spend too long on it (no more than 20 minutes unless you are enjoying the opportunity to philosophize). 2-3 comments that show that you are reflecting on the topic and the readings will be fine.

I think this analogy makes the most sense about language. You don't always know how the program works you just know it does the thing to open Google or Teams. Language becomes this second nature thing that connects all the dots.

I think this is where the danger lies with language and word use and the lack of critical thinking and crowd mentality. If a person can't honestly look at why they feel stirred or uncomfortable with the way someone presents a thought then we get these massive movements of well they said...

I'm guilty of falling in the trap of advertisers and influencers or just people who use words to describe these great products and then it's actually trash. Language is much like a loaded gun...it's the person using it not the item itself.

This quote makes me think about the TED talk, and how the tribe the speaker studied ties time to the landscape. As far as how language influences our thoughts and perception, it makes me think of Donald Trump or organizations like the NRA. The language they use effectievly persuades listeners into believing wild theories and ideas. For example, the NRA convinces supporters they need to own guns incase of political unrest or a civil war. The langauge they use makes this idea seem like a real possibility and not a crazy theory. It's bewildering to think how words in a specific order can become extremely powerful, and extremely dangerous.

If there's anything I learned in the 4 months of graphic deisgn before I dropped out, it's the power of branding and marketing. There is rarely a diference between no name and brand name items, but yet consumers continue to pick up the more expensive option. "Making a dud of a product seem like a blast" reminds me of the informercials that used to come on late at night or when I was home sick from school. I now know those products were all gimmicks, but the infomercials made the products seem revolutionary and almost essential. The language of the hosts was so convincing, that people were willing to fork out "4 easy payments of $29.99" for a product that wouldn't last a month.
