Douglass uses a lot of logos in his writing, such as "It is partly in consequence of such facts, that slaves, when inquired of as to their condition and the character of their masters, almost universally say they cotented, and that their masters are kind" (11).

Since Douglass was a slave, he was able to give vivid personal stories and share his emotions, such as "I did not, when a slave, understand the deep meaning of those rude and apparently incoherent songs. I myself within the circle; so that I neither saw nor heard as those without might see and hear" (8).

One of the best examples of Douglass using pathos is his writing is "I have often been awaked at the dawn of day by the most heart-rending shrieks of an own aunt of mine, whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back until she was literally covered with blood",,,"It was a most terrible spectacle. I wish I could commit to paper the feelings with which I beheld it" (Douglass 3).

Douglass has a very sophisticated vocabulary and uses valid names to avoid unjust prejudice. He doesn't use his own opinions and tries to recall events as clearly as possible. He writes his story with a slave's point of view, using logos. He often describes how his masters don't use much logic at all. Most people in that era thought slaves were happy as a slave since they sang and claimed they were treated well. Douglass uses logos very effectively to keep his audience reeled in.

Douglass was a slave for a large portion of his life. He had first-hand experience that he shared through his writing using ethos. He was able to describe what he saw and felt during these different experiences. Many stories about slaves were not written by one because many of them were illiterate. Slaves were not taught how to read or write, but Douglass knew how to. This makes his story much more interesting because it is his words.

Fredrick Douglass has been a witness to vast amounts of cruelty. These quotes were his first encounter with the severe torture slaves had to live with every day. These emotions impacted him so much that he could hardly put them into words. Douglass used pathos in these quotes to persuade his audience and help them further understand the hardship and pain he and other slaves felt. He used pathos to tug on the reader's emotions and want to continue reading.
