 I think Salva  is sad because he knows he will never see his family ever again. I also think his family was always there for salva to help him and to support him s, so now i  think he does not really know how to take care of himself  without them. Therefore he asks himself "but how can i not go on" so i think he knows his family would want him to move on.

How could Salva survive, but how could he survive without them? The reasons to these are because if he's only 11 and in the desert, than he will probably run low on food slowly, but eventually, there will be nothing. But if he's with is family, he will run on food and drinks faster.
