Not only in chapter 9, but throughout the story Benjamin has stayed quiet about everything that has been going on around the farm. With Benjamin not speaking up, his silence had eventually gotten his best friend slaughtered. Napoleon had Squealer tell everyone that he had Boxer taken care of and that he was to be sent to the veterinarian to heal, with that explanation all of the animals were uneasy about it. “After about a quarter of an hour Squealer appeared, full of sympathy and concern. He said that Comrade Napoleon had learned with the very deepest distress of this misfortune to one of the most loyal workers on the farm, and was already making arrangements to send Boxer to be treated in the hospital at Willingdon. The animals felt a little uneasy at this.” IX pg 36. When Boxer was sent away Benjamin had read aloud what the van had written on the side of it, it became clear to all the animals that Boxer was really sent to the Knacker’s. Squealer saved the pigs reputation by saying the veterinarian bought the van off the knackers but hadn't yet painted over it. The pigs sold Boxer to the slaughter house in return for money, which is why they had whiskey at the end of chapter 9. “ and the word went round that from somewhere or other the pigs had acquired the money to buy themselves another case of whisky.” IX pg 38.

"When the laws of animal farm were first formulated, the retired age has been fixed for horses and pigs at 12..." "a few minutes later two pigeons came racing in with the news: boxer has fallen! he is lying on his side and can't get up!" He was working so hard that his lung stopped working and he could not do anything. Since the animal cannot read, they were watching him get taken to a horse slaughtering place. No one knew until Benjamin said that. The pigs knew exactly what they were doing though. The animals tried telling boxer but he could not do anything

The pigs were the ones who sent boxer to the slaughter house.Benjamin also did not speak up to warm the animals so they had no idea hat was going on and couldn't help. The pigs saw no use for boxer once he retired so instead of let him live out his retirement they decided to kill him for money. The pigs saw whiskey as more valuable than having boxer help out or be around for moral in his retirement.Benjiman said what the van said to late. And the pigs took the money for wiskey as it said in the book
