Can I find some reason to not have to go to school? The moment arrived, and he felt sick in his stomach knowing the insulting comments that would be aimed at him by his so-called friends “all in the name of good fun”. His mom didn’t know. It was too embarrassing to admit even to the ones who loved him the most. He would just keep his head low and try to act like it didn’t hurt and was no big deal. Afterall, it was just another typical day at Middle School

She was just another teenage girl who wanted to make friends and feel like she belongs. She turned to social media to help her find her place. She didn't really know this person, but it did not really matter to her because all she cared about is that she finally found a friend. She would talk for hours and trust her new friend with everything. Little did she know that one post she was about to find will turn her life upside down. She was heartbroken as she found that her new friend was spreading false rumours about her. Never again, will she trust anyone so easily. Never again, will she prioritize her social life over her emotions/safety. Anya Patel’s “new friend” made a scar that would take a long time to heal. But she wouldn’t make the same mistake twice and use social media to make her feel better about her social status.

Young girls are being shamed and put down on one sole fact. Teachers don't like the way they dress. Teachers want them to dress more modestly. Administration gets to decide what they think is school appropriate or not. Some feel embarrassed to be approached by a teacher and told you don't look good enough. In Baron High School a black student was told she looked uncomfortable in her clothes and was showing too much skin, she brought up this issue to a male administrator, who told her it was “because white girls don’t have as much to show.” The student says this comment made her feel uncomfortable, let alone failing to address the inequality. Never will derogatory terms influence young girls.

She stood in fear as the teacher started scolding and humiliating her in front of everyone. She was wearing a cropped sweater vest with a shirt underneath. However, she regretted wearing it as soon as the teacher left her in tears, free for everybody to see. It was the day after her school held and assembly targeting girls about dress code when Sude Celen got dress coded. For her, this was a regular occurrence and happened more often that she would like. She looked at the other tables and noticed a girl wearing something more cropped than she was. Why didn’t she get dress-coded?

Dress codes affect people all over the world. Recently, there has been an uprise in discrimination cases against school districts for dress codes. Dress codes predominantly affect women and people of color. Most people who are targeted against the dress code are disciplined by white male men. People are frustrated by the dress code at Central Middle School. Particularly, Central Middle School Student Emma Snyder says that “the shoulders and ripped jeans is a big thing nobody’s going to look at somebodies shoulders and be quote-on-quote attracted to them, I also think that the ripped jeans are a little ridiculous because people wear shorts all the time and that shows way more than ripped jeans” She is upset about the fact that schools are banning ripped jeans and open shoulder shirts. Snyder says “Anyone should wear what they want and what they feel comfortable in. It shouldn’t be anyone else's decision what they wear and not for other people to comment on what they wear"."Teaching girls that their body parts are inherently bad or important to others implies that how her body looks should be of extreme importance to her" says Bay Area Uncovered’s Elizabeth Cheng. Dress coding makes girls feel insecure and unworthy.

Central middle school students couldn't really process the amount of work that was being given or how much time it took. The time management is rough and will eventually become too much if it already hasn´t. These students should be out having fun enjoying their lives, not having to worry about heavy work loads and spending hours on it. She never really expected to get this much work and neither did him. None of these students wanted or asked for this.

Thirteen year-old Jack Bayne’s mind was filled with completely negative and depressive thoughts as he walked into the classroom the day after his parents confirmed the divorce. He was not in his joyful times nor was he paying attention to any teacher throughout the school day. On almost every test and assignment grade, he failed. His parents divorcing caused him not only to slack in school, but even repeat the whole seventh grade because of how harshly it affected him. In addition, his friends claim to notice that Jack had begun to act “sluggish” and more irritable in front of them rather than how he used to be: happy, kind, and enthusiastic. No matter how much support the parents offered to Jack, it was never the kind of support that he truly needed, triggering his anxiety and depression.

Social Media can be a great place for many teens. It offers many different opportunities and experiences. But keeping that in mind, misuse of social media can be damaging to mental and physical health. If the usage of social media gets out of hand, it can cause a lot of trouble. A lot of places offer help and advice about social media. There are a lot of different resources for teachers, students, parents, administrators to gain knowledge about this topic and learn how to make a difference. For example, the organization Ofsma worked with “administrators and educators to develop and improve school social media safety guidelines keeping thousands of students safer on social media,”(https://www.ofsms.org/about/impact/). They have spread a lot of advice and distributed, “ innovative and effective social media safety tips to thousands of families across the country through our newsletter and major media outlets” (https://www.ofsms.org/about/impact/). There are many other organizations making a change and helping teens but this organization has been extremely focused on” safety efforts on and created awareness campaigns for traditionally vulnerable populations, like foster youth, who are at higher risk of falling victim to social media-related dangers,” (https://www.ofsms.org/about/impact/). They provide many essentials and details and ways about danger and how to deal with social media. If you too want to make a difference in someone else’s life and be part of educating others whats right or wrong, you can also be involved. Some projects and organizations you can join are The IDEALIST, The Smart Social, Volunteer Match and The Puresight. One thing you can do is make your own campaigns or organizations to really make an effort to educate others on social media. You can also have live lectures or announcements to engage others to take a minute and listen to what you say. Stand up for what you believe and make your statement about social media dangers. You can also find some effective ways to get someone off social media and give advice. You can be the solution to someone’s problem.

Anger. Anger and hatred is all they felt for those guys who physically and mentally harassed them. 8th grade CMS student Anya Patel dreaded the part where they had to face those boys. Why did they do that? What was the need? Anya always liked being open about their sexuality and gender. But not as much anymore. They just hated school. These boys who went to CMS as well decided to call Anya slurs and try to hurt them. All they wanted to do was make a difference and teach the boys that it wasn't okay to do that. That didn't work. The boys decided to continually harass them. And when Anya decided to go to guidance about it; nothing was done to help. These boys had really hurt them and nothing was done to help Anya out. Why can't people take action, help others out? For the good of the community. Things had to change.

Is Homework Too Much Stress? - Anirudh

Sonali Gupta, a therapist, always hears stories about her teen clients stressing over homework. One client, Martin Lopez, copes with only 5 hours of sleep during the weekdays, because he is struggling to finish his homework on time. Lopez is a 12th-grader at Jefferson High School and receives a great deal of homework every day. Lopez said he is spending way too much time on his homework and feels he is ruining his physical and mental health. He sits for hours trying to finish his homework and doesn’t have any time to socialize with friends or family. Other teen clients also withdraw from extracurricular activities and sports to focus on their homework. She said these stories of teen clients stressing over homework are very common, and she also thinks it is disappointing to the educational system that students are sacrificing their health to complete their homework. Homework should reinforce what students learned in school, help parents communicate with their children, and help develop healthy habits. Harris Cooper, psychologist and author of The Battle over Homework wrote that, “Research is consistent with the notion that homework can be a good thing if the dose is appropriate to the student’s age or developmental level.” (https://theswaddle.com/too-much-homework-problem/ ) This means that homework is equitable for kids, but they are assigned too much homework, which can lead to stress.

Also according to his book, students should receive 10 more minutes of homework each grade they advance. This would mean a first-grade student should receive 10 minutes of homework, and a 12th-grade student should receive 120 minutes of homework. Instead, students receive many hours of repetitive and long homework every day. Gupta’s thoughts on regulating homework stress are to help students balance their homework, and encourage them to refrain from stress. This will allow students to learn and grow healthfully, and not sacrifice their health.

Joanna was one of three children in a household in Florida. It was no surprise that she came home from school to her parents going back and forth arguing loudly in the kitchen. They usually argued about who paid for what, who slept where, who did what. She was sick and tired of it. Whenever she tried to interfere, or stop the conflict, she just got sent to her room. She was constantly questioning if the whole thing was her fault, or if she had caused it. This was very hard for Joanna and she hoped it would end soon. All of her siblings, her brother and her little sister couldn't wait for the nightmare to end and neither could she. They wished for peace in their home again.
