Iranian leader needed medical help because he was diagnosed with malignant lymphoma. President Carter offered treatment to the leader because it was the humanitarian thing to do. Many Iranian people did not like this leader and wanted a new leader named Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. On November fourth the Shah arrived in New York and to protest 66 pro Ayatollah students smashed the gates and scaled the walls of the American embassy in Tehran. Once inside they took 66 people hostige. Fourteen of these people where eventually let go because they were not American or were women. In Response president Carter launched operation Eagle Claw which involved helicopters storming the embassy. This plan failed due to a sandstorm that made one of the helicopter crashed into a transport train during takeoff, killing eight servicemen.
