The great migration was the largest movement of people in the history of the United States. Around 6 million African Americans moved out from out of the south to mostly the northern region of the country in the 1910s. Along with moving to the north, many people also moved to the West and Midwest. They moved looking for a better way of life and escaping the racism embedded in the deep South.

Step migration - African Americans moving from the rural of the south to the urban cities in the north is an example of this

Chain migration - when the migration of a few to move to the northern cities was taking place, it came with many other who decided that they too wanted to migration north essentially following the first few.

Push factors - some of the push factors were escaping the racism that came with living in the Deep South. The discrimination and prejudice was a major push factor

Pull factors - the north not only came with a less discriminatory aspects, but it came with job opportunities that could help many people. These opportunities could be seen as a pull factor.

Asylum - may of the people of color who lived down south were faced with discrimination. Some of which was life threatening. Those who moved during the migration could have been fleeing the danger of the south for a safer living environment.

Internal migration - those who moved during the great migration were all moving within the country.

Law 1(Most migrants move only a short distance.) - the migrants that left the south didn’t move significantly far away. The still remained in the same country. The places like up north and the Midwest were still relatively close to the south.

Law 2(There is a process of absorption, whereby people immediately surrounding a rapidly growing town move into it and the gaps they leave are filled by migrants from more distant areas, and so on until the attractive force [pull factors] is spent.) - the movement of People of color out of the south caused a group to follow behind them to move as well. And so forth the process continued throughout the 1970s

Law 3(There is a process of dispersion, which is the inverse of absorption.) - not all of the migrants went to the same places, there was a spead of migration that went to the west, Midwest, and the north.

Law 4(Each migration flow produces a compensating counter-flow.) - after the civil rights movement when African Americans began to gain more civil liberties and rights, some began moving back down south.

Law 5(Long-distance migrants go to one of the great centers of commerce and industry.) - this law states that migrants that move a longer distance tend to move towards more urban areas. A large percentage of African Americans who emigrated from the south headed towards the 6 major cities in the north.

Law 6(Natives of towns are less migratory than those from rural areas.) those who lived down south and move north moved towards cities, but not many moved from the cities back to the rural of the south
