I'm Tala! I'm a biology student. :) I've always loved reading books, but I've not been reading as much in the past few years. I've been trying to read more this year, so this is a perfect challenge for me! All but two books listed are ones I've had in my to-read pile for a while, so I'm happy to finally read them and happy that I found some new books in the process.

Here are my list of books:
1. A book set in Florida: Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett
2. A book about academia or a college-like setting: Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
3. A book less than 50 pages long: "April in Paris" by Ursula K. Le Guin
4. A book set in a state or country you would like to visit: Have You Eaten Yet?: Stories from Chinese Restaurants Around the World by Cheuk Kwan (I don't have a specific country I'd like to visit, but I love stories about food so since this is travel & food I thought I'd choose this for the prompt)
5. A book with a red, white, or blue cover: This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno (coincidentally already reading this!)
6. A book genre you have not read before: People From My Neighbourhood by Hiromi Kawakami

I'm a librarian at Valencia West Campus. One of my personal goals this year is to read 24 books. I'm doing so mostly to improve my reading skills, but also to learn how to read for fun again. For this challenge I'm using it as a way to push myself to read books that I've had on my "to read list" but didn't have the time or place for, until now. Here is my booklist so far:

1. Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard

2. Stoner by John Williams

3. All Souls by Edith Wharton

4. 5 Decembers by James Kestrel

5. The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

6. The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story by Nikole Hannah-Jones

I am James Leonard, and I am an English instructor at East. Since I was not teaching Summer A, this post is my first one. I have read four books thus far: Losers Club: A Murder Mystery, by Yvonne Vincent (a book set in Scotland, a country that I would like to visit); The Professor, by Charlotte Bronte (a book set academia); Amazing Grace, by Mary Hoffman and Caroline Binch (a book with fewer than 50 pages); and The Yearling, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (a book set in Florida). I am currently reading a book with a red cover, and I already selected a graphic novel (a genre that I have never before read). I look forward to the discussions!

Hey! I'm Cheryl Ann Livingston. I am a Librarian at Osceola Campus Valencia and have been here since 2001. I only LET myself read on vacation or when I am caught up with everything because if I read that is all I want to do. So I was excited to have an excuse to read!

1~ A Book set in Florida
Matecumbe: A Lost Florida Novel ~ James A. Michener
I love the Florida Keys which is the primary location of the book. This is a romance with a bit of the history of the Keys thrown in. Romance isn't one of my normal genres but historical fiction is so it was close enough for me. It was light reading and a really short book for Michener.

2~ A Book Set in College
Killer Instinct ~ James Patterson
My husband Greg reads Patterson but I haven't read his books before. Some of the important characters were college professors but it didn't actually take place on a college campus :~( oops! It was actually a crime novel (I know shocking with the title Killer Instinct ). I like mysteries and it was very engaging and had some good plot twists.

3~ 50 Pages or less
Topsy-Turvy Kingdom ~ Dottie & Josh McDowell with David Nathan Weiss
I really like Josh McDowell whether as a speaker or an author. He writes Non-Fiction Christian books geared towards Youngish adults, Biblical Apologetics, Evangelistic books but I hadn't read any of his Kid's Books. I loved the message and the illustrations by Lydia Taranovic were vivid and entertaining.

4~ A Book Set in a Place You'd Like to Visit
In the Region of the Summer Stars (Eirlandia Series)~ Stephen R. Lawhead
This is going to be my 6th book and my "reward" book ! I love Lawhead and I always wait until his whole series is out to read them so that I can do them one after the other. I highly recommend his books especially The Pendragon Cycle series, King Raven Trilogy, and the Bright Empires Series.

5~ Red, White and Blue Cover
Superman: American Alien~
Max Landis, Nick Dragotta, Tommy Lee Edwards, Joelle Jones, Jae Lee, France Manapul, Jonathon Case, & Jock
I want to call this a Graphic Story Collection instead of a Graphic Novel. It has 7 different stories by different people and they are in chronological order. On the one hand I typically don't like when someone rewrites a character so I wasn't thrilled that this was the darker version of Superman than the traditional Superman character. On the other hand I have a better appreciation for Graphic Novels! It required thought and studying the graphics to understand the storylines. It was interesting to have the stories done by different graphic novelists.

6~ A Genre You Don't Normally Read
Teaching Black History to White People ~ Leonard N. Moore
This is my next book. I have gone in order except for saving my "reward" book for last. Unfortunately I left this book at work when I was unexpectedly out sick for over a week so I am really behind. Normally I only read Non-Fiction if it is a Biography, History written much like a story or for a class or Bible Study. This grabbed my attention when it came into the Library and I will get on it.

So this was a wild one. I was familiar with the story from the Humphrey Bogart movie, but I was shocked by how intense and hardboiled this is by today's standards. It is also a real page-turner as it somehow forgoes huge descriptions of the setting in favor of action and drama, yet still being so evocative that it borders on being cinematic. This cover made the story feel particular enticing as it very much evokes the tone of pulp noir fiction. One of the big highlights of the challenge for me- Tucker
