The strategy I would use to implement media fluency comes from Middleweb (2022), and it’s about understanding and identifying bias. According to Crockett & Churches (2011), media fluency is about knowing how to decide what medium is most appropriate and effective for communicating a message while analyzing content in any medium. Today’s world is full of misinformation and disinformation. It’s important that our students have the ability, skills, and habits to differentiate, make the proper judgment, and navigate through the mud of murky landscapes (Middleweb, 2022).

To put this strategy into practice. I’ll design an activity where students need to understand and identify the bias reflected in three articles about the same news published by three different media, using their Chinese language ability. The news is about the economic prospect in the year 2023. The first article appears on the official website of the Chinese government. The second article is published on a famous anti-Chinese government overseas website. and the third article is written by an author affiliated with a Singapore-based news agency that takes a neutral stance regarding Chinese-related topics. The first two articles bear political tendencies and inclinations, and the third one is more neutral and impartial about the strength and weaknesses of the Chinese economy. I’ll hide the publisher’s identity information and let the students read the articles, identify the biased opinion or stance of the articles, and decide which one belongs to which publisher.

I use the app of Padlet, because students will first do individual work and then get together to do a discussion. Padlet offers a great platform for group work. Students can choose to write their answers, record their spoken answers, or use graphics to express their thoughts.
