A successful online course should provide students with many varied ways to engage with the content. This may be through online videos with accompanying questions (such as on Edpuzzle) to assess their understanding of the content, or online interactive games, such as through Kahoot.

A successful online course should allow students to engage with one another no matter if the course is synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous meets should have students working in groups or at least talking to one another every (or almost every) class, while asynchronous classes should provide opportunities for discussions through discussion boards or other interactive mediums.

(from Gillian) This connects to comments made by others, but one key criteria for me is the overall design of how the course is laid out/how learning objects are presented to students. Some steps that can support an effective user experience are:

limiting the number of clicks

providing a clear table of contents and consistent/predictable locations for course content

using high-contrast/minimalistic design

Incorporating images/videos and using text concisely (ideally consistly providing multimodal resources)

'chunking' broader topics into clear steps with interactive opportunities for self-assessment

When thinking about how I set up things for students in online or physical spaces, I go back to a favourite tactic from Jen Gonzalez called 'dogfooding'. Essentially, am I making the kind of space or resource that I would want to use myself? I love when an LMS easily lets me see the "student view"

Intuitive Design (Bailey)

An important piece of success criteria for an online course would be making the design of the course intuitive, accessible, and user- friendly for students. Students should be crystal clear on where they go to receive information, content and instructions, and how to submit anything required of them. Online courses can feel overwhelming as it takes a lot of time management and independence on behalf of students, and enhancing the accessibility of our course designs gives students one less thing to worry about as they are learning.
