Their Boredom

Alice and Coraline were both bored with their lives and a magical world appeared before them to fix that. They both had to go through a portal of a sort to reach this new destination. That's where the similarities between these two stories end. Alice goes into a world of what appears to be fairy tale creatures. While Coraline goes into the world of her dreams because her parents are actually attentive and cook good food. In both of these stories things take a turn for the worst and the girls have to escape this special world in order to survive. Boredom was a small price to pay over death or worse when they were in their "better" worlds.

Both films have a clear gate that is crossed from the real world to the fantasy world in which they discover themselves fight a battle and then return to the real world. For Coraline, this is represented by a strange tunnel that she crawls through every night to see her other mother. In Alice in Wonderland, this is represented by a door in a tree that she finds and enters, then she has to go through a small journey, which involves her size changing, for her to get into Wonderland. In both stories, these “gates” represent not only a door into this new world but on a deeper level a changing in the character and a different part of the hero's journey. They are crossing the threshold into this new world where they can discover themselves and meet new friends along the way.

In both Coraline and in Alice in wonderland they both have cats that help mentor them. The cats themselves can talk and give the character valuable advice that they can use as they will. This is where the similarities between the cats ends though. For one the cats are different breeds and colors. One cat is very serious and actually worried about Coraline. while the cat that Alice encounters seems very sinister and gives her advice about wonderland before he vanishes into thin air. One of the cats is from wonderland while the other Coraline's cat is from the real world and followed her into the other world.

Use of Size

Both films use the main character's size to represent some sort of change in the story. Alice in Wonderland does this in a more extreme and noticeable way with her drinking a potion that shrinks her so she can fit through a small door. In Coraline, the change is less noticeable with it being the small size of the door and tunnel she has to use to cross over to the other mother. Either way in both stories their size changes as they go into their new world to represent their “smallness” in this new world and how they have to grow to have an impact in this new world. In Alice in Wonderland, her size and overall difference from her original size is a very active part of the film with her talking to insects in the forest on her way to the palace, and befriending some along the way. The most extreme example being when she grows at the end of the film to fight a dragon.

My closest personal connection with Coraline probably comes from her initial desire to try and find something else in her life. Not in the sense that I don’t get enough attention from my parents and friends but rather that I often feel bored with the repetitive nature of life and seek out ways to make it more exciting and fun. Obviously I don’t do this through sneaking into a small tunnel that leads me to my “other mother” but I find excitement by going to backyard shows and parties, advancing in the professional world of motorsports photography, and just going out with friends with no plan of action. This boredom of typical life is something that Coraline has and is completely vital to the story. I believe that me and Coraline have this boredom and constant looking for more in life that leads us to be similar.

I can relate to Coraline's journey through the "special" world because I too wish I could escape away from my reality into one that is built perfectly for me. I can also relate to Coraline going straight to bed after dinner with her other parents because she wanted to get the heck out of there after her other parents asked her to sow buttons into her eyes. She said "I'm leaving and never coming back" which is totally sometihng that I've said to myself and my parents. When things aren't going well at home I just want to move the heck out and never look back. Just like Coraline wanted to do after things started going sideways with her other parents.
