5 key features of a personal essay.

The first feature I noticed when reading the first two of the three articles (as the third wasn't available) was in both instances they provided context in the title as well as their name at the very beginning of the page. The second features I found to be similar between the two were the "how, what and why" (not in that order) provided in the essays. A good example of this is in the first essay " all I really needed to know I learned in kindergarten" where the author explains in the first few sentences how most of what he learned in kindergarten is relevant in his daily life. He follows by listing off what he learned that has impacted his life. He concludes on the "why the world would be better if everyone just followed all the basic rules they learned in kindergarten. The third thing i noticed was that although the style in which both the essays were written are different, essay one being in list form and two being more of a story format, they both follow the first person perspective that a personal essay should feature. The fourth correlation I saw between the two essays and the features of a personal essay was how they both had a solid Introduction, body of information and conclusion, the conclusion usually being a section of text that tries to convey the writers opinion as supported by the facts, narratives and opinions given in the essay. The fifth key feature I believe I observed was in the second article "thanks for not killing my son", was how the author switches between third and first person. This is accomplished by first stating the facts of what happened to her son from a third person, smoothly transitions through the main information of the essay from third to first person and concludes by explaining how she is the mother of the child and what they had to experience and how she or her son wouldn't wish what happened to them on the assailant. -Angus Burtch

The first thing I've noticed is that personal essays are written in the first person, the authors use words such as "I' or "me" in their sentences. An example of this would be Robert Fulghums opening sentence "Most of what i really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be i learned in kindergarten". I also think they have a chronological order involved with how the events happened. Robert Fulghum demonstrates it by talking about what he learned in kindergarten and how they apply to life now. Rita demonstrates it with the events of her sons attack and aftercare. Personal essays should have a topic sentence that informs the reader what the piece will be about. Rita Schindler and Robert Fulghum both demonstrate this because Roberts first sentence is "Most of what i really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be i learned in kindergarten" and Rita's is "Sometime between 1:30 P.M., Dec. 8, and 1 A.M., Dee. 9, a young man was viciously attacked-beaten and kicked unconscious for no apparent reason other than walking by you on a public sidewalk." The fourth key feature of a personal essay I've notice is they all have a title included with the authors name just beneath them. Both Robert and Rita demonstrate this with Robert's title being "All I really Know I Learned in Kindergarten" - Robert Fulghum and Rita's being "Thanks For Not Killing My Son" - Rita Schindler. The fifth thing I've noticed about personal essays is the last few sentences touch base on the topic. An example of this is Rita restating " You could have kicked him to death but you only left him to die, thank you."

the first feature that i notice is that most personal essays are written in first person. the second feature is there is always an event included in the essay that is significant to the author. the third feature is people always put interesting details in there essays to keep the reader reading. the forth feature is almost every essay has a strong introduction. the last feature that i noticed is there is always a good conclusion wrapping up the whole essay.

After reading all three essays, I have found that the first two had titles that were eye catching. The first feature I recognized was they both were written in the first person perspective. Using examples like "here are the things I learned", (Robert Fulghum) and "I am his mother-and I have been given a second chance-thanks to you." (Rita Schindler) The next feature I seen were they both had personal experience with the topic they chose to write about. Another feature I was able to notice is the tone of the two essays, both were showing their gratitude for what they have learned and both a a positive outlook of the different events that took place. "And so-I thank you for not causing the most horrible and devastating thing that can happen to any parent." (Rita Schindler) A fourth factor was they were both consistent with getting their point across, there was a start and a finish. The last key was that they both used their own vocabulary. It was in plain text and very straight to the point. I knew exactly what they were trying to express and summed up their points in the conclusion. "I hope that someday you'll have children and love them as much as I love mine-but I wouldn't wish on your child what you did to mine. " ( Rita Schindler)

The first thing I noticed while reading the essays is that they are written in first person. secondly there was always an event that is important or significant to the writer/author. Third feature I noticed that people always put lots of detail and information that is interesting to the reader and can keep the reader reading. The fourth feature is that in these essays they have strong introductions which will make people want to read the essay and lastly, these essays and other essays always have a good outing conclusion to wrap up the essay but still in an interesting way.

The First thing I noticed was that they are all written in the first person. All 3 Essays are personal account of lessons they've learned throughout their lives. The Kindergarten rules to the professional life of a Baseball player and to a mother grateful that her son is still alive. I also believe all three are extremely authentic so you get a sense of something very real. They all include lots of details about lives which draws the readers in. The kindergarten lessons about playing well with others is something we are could read again. Marcus Stroman making the best of his injury and finishing school and a Mother whom is grateful her son is alive after the brute attack on her son. All very powerful 3 lessons.

The fact that all of the pieces are written in first person is the first thing that struck me. Each of the three essays is a personal storey of lessons learnt throughout their life. All of them feature elements that spark the reader's interest. The article "thanks for not killing my son," for example, offers graphic details about a young guy who was thrashed for no reason. "He was left lying in a pool of blood from an open head wound-in the Victoria Park-Terraview region," the witness shouted. All of the writings are excellent teachings that everyone may benefit from reading. Another thing I noticed about the essays "the 6ix" and "all i ever really needed to know i learned in kindergarden" is the use of an informal writing style, with phrases like "check this out" and "don't believe me?" as appeared in the 6ix essay.

There should be five paragraphs, with three supporting details. The first paragraphs should introduce the topic, and three supporting details. The conclusion is the last paragraph it should explain the supporting details in a summary. Usually an essay is an opinion with facts to go with it.

The five key features I noticed in the three personal essays started with the titles. Each essay had a unique title that gave context to the rest of the essay. Next is that no matter the person all three essays were written stories from their personal lives. Adding your opinion to a personal essay allows you to express how you feel about the story you've told in it. Use facts to back up your opinion. You can't just express your opinion without stating why you think that way, well you can, but nobody would take you seriously. A personal essay should also be just that. Personal. You don't write it anonymously, you write it in the first person from your own perspective.
