IREX GSR: Self-Care, Leadership, and Sustainable Social Change by

Across the globe, leaders of companies, organizations, and movements are coping with the effects of compounding crises, both personally and collectively. Social change leaders at the front lines of combatting injustice often experience trauma while addressing challenges in the communities they belong to and serve. This panel will share practical approaches to refining leadership development programs to prioritize self-care, resiliency, and inclusion in both virtual and in-person environments. It will draw on examples from IREX programs around the world that support changemakers of varying ages and experience levels to positively impact their communities.

Over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice, political divisiveness, climate disasters, and numerous other issues have challenged leaders of companies, organizations, and movements. In many cases, leaders grappled with advancing their vision, mission, and objectives while pivoting to address overlapping crises. Leaders on the frontlines of solving these global challenges are often experiencing trauma themselves while concurrently working to address crises in the communities they belong to and serve.1 There is growing evidence that in order for these leaders to remain resilient and lead sustainable social change, inner well-being is an essential prerequisite.
IREX’s Community Solutions Program (CSP), Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellows Program, and the Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), are reinvesting in self-care, resiliency, and inclusion as they prepare emerging leaders with the critical leadership skills to drive sustainable change through fellowship programs that develop fellows’ leadership and technical skills.

During this panel discussion, we will share skills and values assessment tools, which measures soft skills development such as resilience and emotional intelligence, as well as how program staff support the development and application of these skills through intentional curriculum and modeling. In addition, IREX program managers will share how IREX is teaching self-care and community care through a holistic leadership development module in the Community Solutions Program that includes a resilience planning tool.

Finally, IREX staff will challenge Western misconceptions of self-care as personal or as something that is equally available to all and share examples of how social change leaders across the globe are approaching self-care as collective work, where social ties mitigate the harm of trauma. Program managers will share early insights on how IREX plans to promote self-care in a fun, youth-centric, interactive way through the new Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Program.
