I think that writing about st allows students (and teachers too) to find out if they’ve really understood what they’re discussing about. Also, it helps organizing their thoughts and improves the use of scientific terms/expressions. Italian students come up against many difficulties when writing about Science: Italian is not the ideal language for scientific communication and they usually write essays or articles about literature, history or philosophy; therefore, their style is often prolix: few of them are able to synthetize essential concepts.

I usually use writing activities for assessment (I strongly prefer it to multiple choice questions) but sometimes I organize some writing to learn activities. For example, when we are investigating Carbon/Oxygen cycle or hydrogeological cycle, I propose reading the tale “Carbon” from Periodic system by Primo Levi. Then students have to made up their story of a C atom, or a H2O/O2 molecule, sometimes continuing a phrase which I’ve written. They can let their imagination run free, but at the same time they need to stay realistic: a C atom can never be alone, it always needs a “mate”. Such an activity makes students go further what they have learned during the class: they need to use what they already know to produce something new.

My first impression is positive, in the sense that I find this method very useful; working with young people who are not attentive during the lessons and not very likely to study, I often find myself dictating the notes in order to "force" them to pay attention to the new concepts; sometimes, after showing a presentation, I ask them to write what they have understood, what they remember of what they have seen; other times I ask them to summarize some topics, even in groups. Unfortunately, the results are not always what you expected. As for the assessment, I would like them to answer open-ended questions but they prefer multiple choice answers by far.

I found very interesting ideas on Dr Gunel’s points of view. I think all teachers implement such activities at school but I do not do it in an organized way and the difficulty is to find the best way to motivate each student. From Dr. Gunel's discussion, I am already motivated to enrich my teaching and assessment methods and ideas by investing more on writing to learn activities. The advantages of such activities, as they have been addressed in the videos include the following: writing helps them in their learning process on whatever topic or subject, b) writing helps them to reshape their conceptual frameworks and to reflect their ideas, c) students can adopt the new information in a comfortable way. However, I insist that these advantages are seen in the motivated students only. So, the real issue for the teacher is to find the best motivation for each student. In addition, these activities can be an assessment teacher tool, so that the teacher can explore how the students are progressing in learning conceptual ideas of science.
In the framework of “writing to learn activities”, I usually use multiple choice questions, or short essays on the topic that we are discussing. I also use technology enhanced teaching to foster their motivation. Very recently I have implement “expressing yourself to learn” activities. By the end of the school year my students have to implement a short essay on one of the biological topics that we have covered within the school year. I encourage them to express themselves in a creative way and surprisingly most of them choose to construct a biological model, e.g. animal or plant cells, the DNA ladder. They pick up the subject, collect the information and build their construction in the school class. Such activities make students reshape their learning since they have to use their scientific knowledge to construct something new. This kind of work really motivates students, and especially the low score ones.

This year im trying to do, i changed a lot of conceptual activities and i thought that if my students make some different things they can learn a lot. The first activity was about "The cell", in a proyect they were writing like papernotes and made a magazine with all the interested things they found. Now they can talk about cell, but they actually know that scientist have a lot of information and everyday in the world we have a lot of changes.
Here below i'll post an example about this exercise, i hope you like.

I am firm believer that writing is a key skill our students need to practice and improve on as it is a very important means of communication. Having said that, in Malta we are bilingual. Our national language is Maltese but English is also an official language. Despite so, Maltese is the main language of choice for most people. Science syllabi are in English. Science is assessed in English, although, due to most students and teachers language of preference generally being Maltese, many prefer Maltese as the language of instruction. Therefore, while once again I personally agree and believe in the importance of writing tasks, I think students locally would not be very keen on extra writing tasks. Having said that, the must not be neglected. I think writing tasks (not including traditional questions and handouts) in Malta could be useful and successful if not assigned too often.

I agree with Dr. Murat Gunel, I find that the rational writing is very useful to learn even more from the scientific activities carried out.
For example, I use, let students develop (during laboratory activities that last more than a few lessons) to write small laboratory "reports" where in addition to the recipe, tools, reagents and measuring instruments , answers to some questions: What was the objective of this exploration? Have we reached the goal? What step has been taken today in research to explain the phenomenon? There were things that surprised you, that you did not expect?
I strongly believe that there is a close connection between writing and learning. The answers to the questions that students give, help me to understand: a) if they really understood what they did; b) the progress of each of them; c) how can I help them in learning; d) what is the case of recalibrating or implementing for fully conscious learning.

I would like to express that in the classroom, I find that our students try to write notes by expressing important parts of them which I see to be crucial in the science teaching of today. I believe that it will be useful to develop a new teaching language for 21st century education technology. I am actually working on this kind of science language for the last 10 years. a scientific language that has long been symbolized, is very important for the spread of science. narrative writing causes the students to be bored in lessons, to move away from science, to enter into incomprehensible ways in terms. When science is reduced to the public, then societies develop faster.

I think “writing to learn” is a very helpful structure for both teachers and students. Writing is a tool for teacher to see how their students are progressing in learning conceptual ideas of science. The teacher can see the conceptual framework of their students about topics and he can find eventual mistakes. Students can become aware of their science knowledge and while writing they can learn things they did not know before or that they did not think before. I use this tool in a lot of activities: when we have a discussion about a problem and we make brainstorming activity or when we make laboratory activities I ask students to write their previous, their observations, their plan to investigate the problem. I ask students to write at home their lab report (including all the activities … ). When we return in classroom I ask students to explain their observations and the interesting thing they had discover during the lab. When we make a test I ask student to write.

I use a method that greatly facilitates my students, especially those less "scholars" to learning with writing and that is using "friendly maps": students will have to read one or more questions after reading a short text or short periods , depending on the text, related to the content. After having formulated the questions found in the text the answer and bring it back on the map. Here is an example made this morning in class ...

Students can learn methods to organize their ideas with the help of writing tasks. I think that writing is an essential part of science because it is important to document our observations to do an experiment. We analyze the data and come to a conclusion by writing down our thoughts. And again, written texts are necessary to publish our research and discussions in science are often held through articles. It therefore makes sense to include writing in the science classroom.

We use the table for this.
- Students at the beginning of the lesson, in groups, ask questions about the subject: what are they curious about, what would they like to know, what would they ask for?
- Reflection of students at the end of the lesson - students draw questions, I have 10 such questions on colored pages, and everyone writes a reply in a notebook. Students share their reflections in pairs or class forums, or I pass between them and review their reflections.
- students create mind maps for a fragment of the lesson, etc.
Below is one of the mind map my students.

Teachers will then be able to provide feedback accordingly and mould the lesson strategy accordingly to help students fill any conceptual gaps.

I use writing in class mainly when I ask students to write answers to open-ended questions, mind maps, brainstorming for ideas and obviously to write lab reports.

Writing is powerful tool as it allows for different types of use while expressing yourself. Students can make notes to help remember things they have learnt, write on a notebook or diary descriptions of something observed while in the lab or on fieldtrips or make a more elaborated texts to reflect opinions or conclusions of what was observed. Never thought about it as "writing to learn activities " but I have been applying it quite often in my classes. I hand out news about the subject we are studying and then ask pupils (individually) to read it and to write down the data relevant to the class. Afterwards they discuss in groups and come out with a list of things that all members agree are relevant .Then as a class we discuss the data they chose, relate it to what was the purpose of the day. At the end of the class I make a wrap up and, maybe, add to it in case is needed.
Another way in which I use writing to learn is by asking pupils to make report in the shape of Gowin's V during practical activities.

I totally agree to what Dr. Gunel has to say. It is indeed an effective tool to reflect conceptual ideas on a piece of paper. It happens many times that we may have certain flow of ideas when we interact in a group which is very important to note down or else it fades from the memory. So apart from examinations I also make students take notes while learning in the class and also while they are working in groups.
