This is my first attempt using a stop motion to make a short animation

Today we learned how to use DragonFrame as well as all the lights and cameras, in this short animation I tried to keep everything in frame as well as add a glass shatter effect using premiere pro. The effect is nothing to write home about however I just wanted to go over the basics of premiere pro again as it has been a while since i last used it

Something I feel I need to watch out for when doing stop motion is having my hands in frame as even in this thumbnail you van see my fingers in the frame. This was mainly a result of me just rushing a little bit as I started to get comfortable with it.

The frame rate I used for this animation is the same as I used for most of my 2D work, that being 12.5 Fps. although that framework being half of the cinematic standard I believe that it adds a certain charm to the stop motion puppets as well as giving me more time to experiment with the StickyMan.

First test using pixelation and claymation these two short animatics were good for helping understand the basics of both types of animation helping me get a grasp on both before doing my final animatics for it.

First I started off with pixelation, using my hand as the main prop, tapping my fingers and making it crawl before jumping at the camera overall it was easier than I thought. However I feel that it will get a lot harder if I was to carry on down the path of pixelation.

The claymation was fun I enjoyed making the little guy. I didn't enjoy destroying him though I want to keep my guys alive!!!

in the end I prefer claymation despite how awful my hands feel now.

Above is the video we created in the stop motion studio using our full bodies. With Francis at the helm as the director we were able to create this Street Fighter esc animation with me and Kian as the puppets.

This was a lot harder than I initially expected as we had to be put in a lot of extremely uncomfortable positions. Especially kian poor guy. However I believe that this turned out better than I would've expected and overall I did enjoy making it. I don't think ill be doing full body pixelation for my final piece but it is an interesting medium.

Apart from that I am quite proud of this piece of work.

Bonus: I decided to incorporate the buzzing of my fridge into this work as without it the silence is too loud and even after trying to find silence to add to make it feel less like I was testing controllers in an empty void I added the buzzing which almost sounds like a fluorescent light. ( one idea i just came up with was that i could've had it so the light on the table flicker every now and then to give off a true fluorescent light effect)

For this one I enjoyed creating the characters out of paper it was probably my favourite part of this animation. This one came out basically how I had hoped again it could be improved such as the original idea which was to have the green guy melt and his bones appear in the goop left over.

However I couldn’t figure out how to do that with paper.

I also think I would’ve enjoyed this one more if I had stuck to my original thought of having it quite absurd with shapes and realistic elements combing such as the work of Jan Lenica or even Bruce Bickford.

I really enjoy how this one turned out it is definitely my favourite so far, I have an idea as what to do with the editing so that is why the frame cuts to them dead at the end. The only thing I regret is not making them be in more exaggerated positions when they got blown up such as one with his arm off or leg missing however we live and learn and I can remember that for next time.

At first I was thinking about making a bomb out of clay but I instead chose to have just the wires on show as to not have anything on screen be blocked by a box in the middle. What was quite funny was having to expand the amount of clay holding the wires in place as when the yellow sticky bones was lift in it up we nearly had a piece of wire sticking out.

The white background was chose specifically to contrast the sticky bones having black joints and I felt like the white felt more like a boxed I room compared to green. Ultimately I think I made the right choice.

The biggest problem facing this animation is the left over clay which previously mentioned I could’ve corrected during the shoot by simply using clay to pick it up and even during post production I was unable to remove it however I believe it does not change much within the scene and it still turned out how I would like.

The camera angle change in this one was a well done thing I like to think.

The squeak was heavily altered for fun to make the rat sound like it had a reallly deep voice, this was ultimately chosen as the direction because I thought it was funny.

This one turned out fantastic I really love how the screen shakes when the green guy stomps I feel it adds a bit more to the scene as well as how the bird starts to move so fast we see him fade slightly and see after images. Again this one turned out well and the editing has improved it ten fold I believe

Here is what I was talking about earlier when I was saying about knowing what I wanted to do with the editing I think this was the one that turned out the best and is definitely my favourite of all the animations. One subtle change I hadded was the colour, by slightly altering g the colour I was able to bring it out and make it stand out a lot more than before. Ultimate I am very proud of this one and I believe upper animation to be my favourite type of animation, next I will have to experiment with making my own puppet.

After going through this module gaining new skills and learning important things that will no doubt enhance my work and will be used time and time again throughout my stop motion journey I am happy with everything I have created. It is fun to look back and see how my work has evolved over twelve weeks. The editing side has been something I have been doing since college so that was easier however I have never done stop motion before so this was a great introduction to it. Of course there are areas I can improve as that will be the case until the end of days but for a first start I can see myself continuing this course and enjoying it until the very end.

It was quite simple to do using just the tools found on premiere pro by that may be from having previous experience doing so.

The thing that took me the longest was trying to find piano music that I like from one of the free sound sites we could use that took me probably longer than the animation itself.
