He launched his career with The Pyramid Companies in Syracuse, where he managed the development of two regional malls. After two years, Joseph Nicolla became a partner at The Edgewater Companies in Syracuse and assisted with the land acquisition and development of more than 1 million square feet of commercial property for IBM. In 1988, Joseph Nicolla returned to Albany with the establishment of Columbia Development Companies, a diversified real estate development and investment firm. Since then, he has overseen residential, retail, and commercial projects for clients across Upstate New York and taken a leading role in historic renovations within Albany. His work in the city has earned him honors such as the James M. DiNapoli Award. Joseph Nicolla has also become a leading philanthropist. As the chair of the 2012 Capital Region Heart Ball for the American Heart Association, he helped gain more than $450,000 in funds to support the organization’s programs.
