The reason the U.S. and the USSR where the two major superpowers was because they were the only one's left with power after WWII. The U.S. was a lot stronger because we had atomic weapons and the Soviets had lost 20 million people in WWII and they where lead by Stalin. but the U.S. still had problems the U.S. needed a strong free market oriented Europe so we could sell all the goods we where making. The Soviets on the other hand where more concerned with another Germany invasion. So by the end of WWII the USSR started to encourage the creation of pro communist governments in places like Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria, which proved to be fairly easy because those nations were occupied by Soviet troops. The idea for the Soviets was to create communist break between them and Germany, but to the U.S. it looked like communism may just keep expanding, that would be really bad for us, because who would buy our industrial goods? So America created this policy called the policy of containment, introduced by Diplomat George F. Kennan's. And what this did was that communism could stay where it was but was not allowed to spread. And ultimately this is why we fought wars with Korea and Vietnam. first test of containment came in Greece and Turkey in 1947 it was a strategically valuable region because it was near the Middle East, and the U.S. was interested in oil.
The containment policy laid the foundation for a military build up or an arms race meaning who ever has the most nuclear weapons will win. By the end of 1950, the contours of cold war had been established, west vs. East, Capitalist freedom vs. Communist totalitarianism. In other words that means when will I be blown up. No longer is a plague or natural disaster our biggest threat, our biggest threat is our own selves we hold the power to end the human race as a spices.
