-This quote shows that the people of Maycomb aren't who Jem had thought they were. He had hoped that they would step up to support Tom Robinson and do the right thing.

-Calpurnia was explaining to Atticus that the black community had left piles of food on their porch as a sign of appreciation. Even though Atticus had lost the case, they understood the risk he had taken by standing up to racism.
•"Atticus Finch won't win, he can't win, but he's the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that"(Lee 289).
-Miss Maudie is trying to explain that there is no way that Atticus is able to beat Bob Ewell, and his daughter Mayella, while defending Tom Robinson. She also stated how much longer Atticus had kept the jury out than any other lawyer would. Which meant that the jury took longer than it usually would to decide whether the verdict was guilty or innocent, showing a sign of progress in race relations.

The main event being discussed in chapter 22 that furthers the plot in the rest of the novel is the appeal process. Atticus explains to Jem and Scout that there is still a chance for Tom Robinson. People continued talking about the appeal process throughout the rest of the chapters saying how Atticus has another chance to persuade, and give more evidence to the jury to help show that Tom Robinson is innocent, and hopefully will win the trial. This chapter is needed in the novel because it is the day after the trial and knowing about the appeal process gives, not only Tom Robinson and Atticus hope, but the entire black community.

•Jem was crying tears of injustice. He thought that the people of Maycomb would' ve done the right thing and he was upset that they convicted Tom Robinson of being guilty.
•Atticus explained to everyone not to worry and its not over yet because there is still the appeal process.
•The Finch family had received different varieties of food from the black community of Maycomb as a sign of appreciation for how hard Atticus had fought for Tom Robinson.
•Jem, Scout, and Dill head out to witness Miss Stephanie Crawford explaining the trial to both Miss Maudie and Mr. Avery. Miss Maudie then offered the kids cake as a way to show everything is good between them.
•Jem was bummed out because he thought that the citizens of Maycomb were good people but he doesn't think that anymore since nobody stepped up to help support Tom Robinson.
•Miss Maudie explained to Jem that some did try to help Tom, like Judge Taylor. Instead of appointing an inexperienced lawyer to defend Tom Robinson, he appointed Atticus.
•Even though Atticus didn't win the trial, he left the jury thinking for a long time which was a step in the right direction dealing with segregation.
•Dill randomly brought up that when he gets older he is going to become a clown so he can laugh at everyone.
•Jem broke the news Dill that clowns are the ones that are laughed at. Dill said that he is going to change it up and laugh at everyone else.
•Earlier that morning Bob Ewell stopped Atticus, spat in his face, and told him that he'd get him even if it took him the rest of his life.
