Satire 1

One instance where there was satire in the play was when jack(ernst) was talking to gwendolen about his name. Gwendolen was going on about how ernst, his fake name, was nice and how jack, his real name, was a horrible name. It's satire because she says she loves him and goes on about him even though she doesn't know his real name. Pg 41, 42

Jack and Algernon are very alike to each other, they are men who care more about their free time and social life than status. They both share a "burgundy" of their own Algernon's being Burgundy and Jack's being Earnest. They dislike sticky situations and rather do anything else than their duties. "I have Bunbureyed all over Shropshire on two separate occasions" page (34)

Another instance of satire was when lady Bracknell was interrogating Jack about his marriage with Gwendolen. It's satire because she was acting as if she was the police and wanting to know Jack's whole life. As if she owns him in some way.

Algernon is very laid back but at times can be very uptight with certain people which contradicts jack he seems more of an uptight person who cares about those around him. Although they contradict each other they almost mirror each other especially with the bunburry. " I'm not a bunburyist at all. If gwendole accepts me, i am going to kill my brother...." pages (36)

Upper Class Gentleman are portrayed as normal men back then except with a few exceptions. Algernon does have a butler and talks to him as if it is super normal to have one. And also he seems to do a lot to impress since he knows he can with his money, just like how he went and bought those sandwiches for lady bracknell.

Jack is a man with many different facades. He isn't neccesarly the type of upper class person you expect him to be. They are stressed with the many different tasks that they are designed with. Jack was a man who was luckily born into wealth altough. "I don't know who i am by birth. I was .... well, Found."
