According to Erik Carter (as I'm remembering as I'm studying for the MA exam), relationships are one of the 3 R's of effective schooling. I believe breaking down barriers through awareness lessons will breed stronger, positive relationships.

I have chosen to do a unit on feminists in art.  We will be focusing a little more on Women of Color in art.
The goal of this project is for students to be able to create their own self-portraits that express themselves (we will end with Frida Kahlo) and be able to analyze art by describing what they see and explain what the artist thinks/feels in their projects.  I am still debating on including poetry.
I may add more/remove some of the artists due to time limits and as I find more artists. 
Some of the artists/groups we will be studying are : Carmen Lomas Garza, Frida Kahlo, Jaune Quick-To-See-Smith, Yayoi Kusama, Las Adelitas, Cynthia Tom, Augusta Savage.

Students will be picking an artist, writing about them and then doing a project where they create something similar to what the artist of their choice is.

My students love to dance and get their bodies moving. It is regulating and provides sensory input as well. I imagine that students could take turns coming up with dance moves and then have everyone else shadow their moves. I would like to integrate technology, like just dance. The girls chose the songs they wanted to sing and everyone participated in some way. It was by far one of the most fun girls group activities we've done all year. One of my students who struggles with social interactions and lacks many relationships with peers has volunteered to read a speech she is very proud of at next weeks girls group.

It was a project I taught to a 5th grade class I have been teaching my Curriculum Unit. I wanted to introduce myself and thought this would be perfect. Vincent Van Gogh's, The Starry Night, has been broken into 36 individual pieces and each student was able to color their piece/part of the famous painting without knowing what piece/part they had or who had the connecting pieces/parts of the painting. As you can see it turned out Beautiful, especially once I put it all together. We haven't actually cooked, but I wanted to share some treats and snacks with them and they have Loved it. The only hitch is that they have to make whatever the treat or snack is, for their friend. This treat was simple and it was close to Valentines Day.

The use of natural peer supports is beneficial for independence, offers social benefits, students are willing to learn and work from each other and it allows teachers or support staff to focus on other areas within a classroom or the school environment. I have been wanting to use more natural peer supports and these projects have given me an opportunity to look at these areas and to make positive changes in my student's lives
