Admittedly this strikes me as non-Western pedagogical practices and yet the need for this in a climate where dogged individualism, particularly in religious education becomes an oxymoron, n'est pas? I am very much interested in further discussions on this topic.

This beautiful painting was created by Ms. Kyung-ja Chun (1924-2015), one of the most representative female artists in modern Korean art. In the painting, we see three women gathered around a glass table, accompanied by several fish. The fish suggest a sense of dynamic movement and, at the same time, evoke one of the oldest symbols of Christianity.

Ms. Chun once said that this painting represented one of the happiest moments of her life. When I look at this work, I find a meaningful similarity between it and Andrei Rublev’s icon The Trinity. We often understand theological doctrines through abstract theories, foundational principles and solemn theological language. However, Chun’s painting offers us a creative and imaginative way of approaching a theological doctrine such as the Holy Trinity: through the bright, lively, and witty conversation of women gathered together around a table.

The other picture shows a community of Juju Haenyeo-women free divers and workers-on Jeju Island, located off the southern coast of Korea. Juju Island is approximately twice the size of New York City. The unique culture and traditions of the Juju Haenyeo community have been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Haenyeo dive into the sea to gather shellfish and seaweed, working a challenging and sometimes dangerous marine environment. In recent years, their traditional working practices have also received significant attention from the perspective of environmental sustainability and ecological coexistence.

The Haenyeo have a distinctive communal tradition of decision-making. Before entering the sea, they collectively consider weather and sea conditions and decide whether it is safe to dive. Traditionally, Haenyeo are grouped into three levels according to their diving experience and ability: highly experienced divers can descend to depths of around 20 meters, intermediate divers to around 10 meters, while older women and beginners generally work at shallower depth of around 5 meters.

Although the most experienced Haenyeo play an important role in making decisions about diving and safety, the power of the community is not controlled exclusively by them. The Haenyeo community is characterized by a strong sense of equality, mutual care, cooperation, and harmonious relationships among highly experienced divers, intermediate divers, older members, and beginners.

These qualities-collective decision-making, respect for experience without exclusively control of power, ecological sustainability, mutual care, and equality-are among the most distinctive characteristics of the Juju Haenyeo community.

Dr. Moon Son, sm0925@yonsei.ac.kr

Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea
