It Was Surprisingly Open-Ended!!

I feel I was too theoretical. It was good and I feel that I was capable to answer the questions. However, eventually the question became very open and I was constrained by the limit of my theoretical knowledge. I feel to prepare for the tests, I need to be more open to both core and additional information. Since ISL was more theoretical, I felt safe from that test; however, taking the LAD test was surprisingly difficult due to the openness of the questions that really drained every theoretical knowledge I know, and squeezed it again leaving no clue left to answer.

I may need to remember, but I have to understand it before that.

What went well

I think the test was balanced, combining closed-type and open-ended questions. We could easily and effectively share the ideas and knowledge in the test. Moreover, it covered most of the things we learnt in the class. For open-ended questions, we could extend and elaborate the answers by doing research on our own during the test, leading to getting some perspectives from this.

Thing I want to have better

For open-ended questions, that would be better if there were word limitations. I was not sure if I was writing long enough. For multiple-choice questions in ISL class, which is the only class I'm joining now, instead of asking the definition, it'd be better if there were some specific questions about them.

I think it's kind of sad for me because I find the material interesting in the very late moment (when I'm studying for mid-term😩) and didn't put my best effort in learning it before. I really love how we got to realize every single thing that happens naturally around us, like prescriptive or descriptive grammar, into something more defined. It’s amazing to realize how much more there is behind the simple things we do with language and communication every day. This made me excited to keep discovering the layers of meaning and patterns that lie behind, and I look forward to exploring how these insights shape the way we understand and interact with each other.

I also like the fact that there's activities log which help on the student who cant join catch up on their own and the materials a readily available which is nice. the activities and the challenges provided is fun and challenging enough that we learn and have fun.

To improve: I really should stay awake more given the length of the class with the amount of coffee and energy drink I consume I still feel sleepy more often than not (i might make another doctor appointment for this) However, one aspect of my studies that I truly enjoy is group projects, or projects in general. These provide an excellent opportunity for me to apply the theories I’ve learned in a practical context, or to gain new insights as I work through the tasks. This hands-on approach makes learning far more engaging and effective for me.

The pace of the class was also not too fast and the materials provided are easily accessible and helpful.

What to improve: Since the duration of the class is long, I need to work on staying focused during long classes. Umm, I think I just need to devote more time into studying outside of the class to understand the materials more efficiently, especially with LAD since its materials and topics are heavily theoretical.

I knew it would be hard, but I tried my best to learn and understand many subjects and topics (even though I sometimes mixed things up). So, finally taking this class made me feel like a proper ELED major.

I feel like both classes have made me cover a moderate amount of knowledge I needed to learn more about the English Language.

One of the interesting topics from ISL and LAD class is about Mental-Linguistic within L1 & L2. It's somehow wen well with my learning because I can take one or two aspects to relate with. Moreover, aspect that I still concern about is mostly from ISL class, especially when I have to learn about syntax, morphology, and other things related with English components learning stuff, and that is something I have to take further to some extent of way to learn. Apart from what I have written, the lecturing within in both class is well approach, and I have favorable when in meantime or it was exaggerate kind of thing to do, we're given the best way of privilege so that the intensity was not harsh to perceived. In the end, I could say everything is pretty well I have learned, but along the way I need to stick with the process and improve in particular area. One last time, one of the best parts is that the lecturer will always share any kind of info such as competition, volunteer, or even his personal experience.

In ISL, I often got twisted memorizing one thing to another since there are a lot of new terms learnt. It also took me lots of time to comprehend the lesson. But during the test, I think it really helped me understand, recall, and link the overall materials by searching up the answers supported by unlimited sources.

In LAD, the thing that I like the most is when we are teamed up to share about a material on the spot. This method threw my sleepiness away since the afternoon, especially after lunch, is a very tempting time to sleep.

When I first applied for this class, I was not that optimistic because all I knew was that linguistics is a complicated topic to learn. However, throughout half of this semester, I felt quite relieved and curious about learning the origin of language, and I find myself enjoying the study of linguistics. I never once considered the details in knowing how languages are shaped/made, but by learning all of the structures such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc. (probably what we'll learn more in the future), I find it all fun and it also gives me the opportunity to consider the depth of a language. I think all of these are also affected with the way Mr Eka taught us. I love to learn engagingly with others because it gives me more chances to consider and know better about some perspectives and knowledge that I have not yet thought/know about.

Even though some materials (ahem.. phonetics) are quite difficult to learn and be familiar with, I think can make it to the end!

Throughout the first half of the semester has been quite challenging, especially in learning new materials related to language acquisition such as the tree of morphemes (ISL). There were some of the theory that I find easy to understand and there were also several parts which I think pretty complex, such as the "Place of Articulation" in Phonetics lesson. I couldn't really remember which sound produced from which part of our body. However, these struggles were helped enough by group works as we share what we understand to one another. I'm into LAD more than ISL however, because in my opinion I enjoy and get to understand the theory of learners' personalities and the development of humans' language easier than lesson in ISL. But I'm still looking forward to our upcoming lessons both in ISL and LAD, though.

I think I want to learn more about both lesson in ISL and LAD through a group work since it helps me a lot so far.

I am more fond of a type of open question that requires us to reflect on what we have learned so far. As a result, during the test for the LAD class, I was quite enjoying the process of it. Probably the issue for LAD was the time limit. Due to the time limit, I need to construct and organize my thoughts to avoid being late for the submission. This was challenging for me because most of the time I have a tendency to write and explain something too much, such as giving an example and introducing the citation while making the explanation as the form of inference to the citation. However, I was having a hard time when I did the ISL midterm. Due to too much theorizing that we have learned in ISL, it made my head quite overwhelmed. In fact, I am the type of person who is more into understanding by my own word rather than remembering something exactly like the original of it. As a result, I took too much time for ISL, even though I almost ran out of time for the exam itself. For me, learning theoretical material that demands we use our ability to remember something is taking some time until I finally grasp the idea of it. Hence, this midterm was totally challenging for me. Not only do I need to improve my organizing skill to construct my thoughts more effectively, but I also need to enhance my recalling skill by finding my own way to improve it gradually.

I think during the learning in class, it was quite a slow-paced for me because the theory learning gave me slower insight. But during my study for the exam, I learn more because I learn from jigsaw reading with friends that help me a lot (even though some material we learn did not come out). I also think that a fun activity like the morphology part where we have to figure out in the white board as class activity also become my insight and help me more in understanding it. The exam itself also refer more on our knowledge and our critical thinking to answer it. Overall the material from this half semester in ISL has give me some insight on how it have many things I just learn even though we use it daily like phonetics, mental grammar, and others. In LAD I learn about how personality, motivation, and learning style can connect to each other.

I also did jigsaw reading with my friends to prepare for the exam day, and by doing that, I got to learn more from myself and my friends because we discussed the learning materials with each other, which made me think that I was ready for the exam day. However, on the exam day, I was a bit confused about how to answer the questions, and it made me think that I still needed to improve myself by understanding the learning materials more, but I'm glad that I was still able to do the exam.
