Joy Wang Unit 2: Perspective by j0yWang__

The purpose of this Padlet is to keep track of your learning for Inside Out and Back Again. More specifically, the notes you record are meant to prepare you for the summative assessments.

There are three summative assessments for this unit: the fishbowl discussions, the literary essay and your exhibition project.

Tip: Stay organized by color coding and adding titles to your notes.

The papaya tree-the papaya tree symbolizes Ha because it shows the process of her growing. First she was green, just a normal girl will a normal life, not knowing the harsh reality. Then, she turns yellow, Becoming more mature and understanding the war and her mother. When she becomes ripe, she knows that being sad will only make her mother worry, so she acts like she doesn’t care and understand so she can let her mother not worry. When the papaya has been cut open, the seeds are like her inside feelings that she keeps away from everyone else. Wet and crying for the desperate situation her family is in.

Ha’s doll-Ha’s doll is like her. The mice bit marks are like invisible scars she has from all the things she has experienced. Her father, the war, the inflation, the hunger. All of these she consider as learning experiences to learn and grow, which is why she loves the doll more for her scars.

Brother Khoi’s baby chick- Brother Khoi insistes her not to go, where he mentions the newborn chick and Ha’s papaya tree. This symbolizes how they want to keep their normal life stable instead of having to go elsewhere. The trunk of Ha’s papaya tree is the stability of her normal life, and brig Brother Khoi and Ha doesn’t want to change that. The baby chick is like a new motive for brother Khoi to protect his old life from new experiences.

The amethyst ring-the amethyst ring is like Ha’s doll for mother. It remind mother of the old memories without the war and the time she had spent with her husband.

Brother Khoi’s broken chick- this chick is the thing brother Khoi thinks he still power over with. With all of the things that happening within his life, he feels that this is the only thing he can control, he can protect. When that chick dies, he is losing the only thing he has control over, which means he now has to accept the fact that nothing will be the same anymore.

The bundle- the bundle represents their past, because since that are escaping, their lives are not going to be the same anymore, so it’s like forgetting the part, and starting new. The sign if Ha”s doll hugging the chick means that all though Ha is smaller then Brother Khoi, she will always be there for him.

The amethyst ring- the amethyst ring for mother means the eternal memory of father, wish she still has hope for. It reminds her of her past, of how nice and plain it was, how happy it was.

Papaya tree-in part 3, the papaya tree still represents Ha, but Ha’s emotions and thoughts about the world had dramatically changed. She is no longer the naive, innocent, happy girl she once was. In the poem not the same and not bad at all, the author is trying to show how ha had changed drastically, and is not really happy with that change. Ha is unfamiliar with the strange and different environment she is in, and even though it’s been months, she still misses home. And her life in school isn’t that ideal as well. In the poem not bad at all, the context means that even though her life is not ideal, there are people like her mother supporting her. So she is starting to accept the change.
