https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-53887947
This article, that I have chosen, describes the overcoming of the cureless wild poliovirus in Africa. The article describes what the virus is, how it spreads and what damage it does to the body as said "It can lead to paralysis by attacking the nervous system." Because the virus paralyzes the muscles needed for breathing many children have died after being infected. The article talks about how the interesting development of the vaccine, developed by Dr Jonas Salk in 1952, started the long process of getting rid of the virus. Poliovirus survivors worked hard bringing the vaccine to the remotest of African villages and convincing people to vaccinate their children.
It also includes the chart of polio cases for Nigeria which was the last country free of the wild poliovirus. Now in Africa, the only polio cases found are those of the vaccine-derived poliovirus. I chose this article because after reading it reminded me of humanities perseverance.

I and my three sisters have all inherited herpes from my mother. But I got the short end of the stick and am most prone to multiple cold sore outbreaks at once. My record is nine. Now I understand that a huge factor in my outbreaks was also how stressed I was all the time. In January of last year, I was dealing with seasonal depression and stress because of school I made the enormous mistake of drinking beer out of a glass bottle which my father warned me about. The result was the worst breakout of cold sores in my life. My mom took me to the hospital for a check-up. When it was my turn to see the doctor it didn't take her much to see why I was there, after talking about my past experiences with cold sores she checked my heart with a stethoscope and simply prescribed me some medicine to stop the inflammation of the cold sores. On the way to the hospitals' pharmacy, I made the mistake of looking into the elevator mirror I had never seen myself so defeated pained and miserable. The look in my eyes was that of an eternally heartbroken soul and my lips looked as if they were grazed by the tires of a race car. After that experience, I'm always careful out of what I drink, I always make sure I'm taking vitamin C and eating healthy, I take better care of myself in general. After starting to also take care of myself emotionally and preventing too much stress in my life I am happy to say I haven't had a cold sore for about half a year now.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/25/people-just-have-less-time-now-is-the-mediterranean-diet-dying-out

This article talks about the issue of fast food replacing a healthy Mediterranean diet. It says that the children and young adults of Spain, Italy and Greece are slowly becoming more overweight and that the reason for this might be that there is less time to focus on cooking a healthy meal especially for working young adults as quoted; “I think the problem is that young people work nowadays and they have less time to cook,” she said. “Before women weren’t working and they had more time to cook. People just have less time now. They just do what’s easiest.” says Cristina Rojo. It is very apparent that because of westernization food that is an important part of culture is slowly becoming less enjoyed in general. Authorities have been taking action to deliver fruit vegetables and milk to elementary schools where the children are also being taught about the importance of a healthy diet. There have been attempts to ban fast food outlets but none have succeeded.

Many studies about mental health say that there have been more cases of mental disorders now in the last few generations than ever before and that the cause is most likely because of the rise of social media. It is now the norm for children to have smartphones with access to the internet but this shows to be very harmful not only to children or teens but to everyone. Using social media platforms with many ads are very harmful because they make the viewer subconsciously want for things that would not make them happier. There is no more feeling of privacy. Because of this constant lingering pressure to belong somewhere, people lose their feeling of self and start to put themselves down because they aren't able to measure up to the standards they think they should. Social media has also a bad effect on humanity when it comes to communication. If users had a set healthy boundary for how much time they should be communicating on the phone and in real life then there wouldn't be a problem but because most people can't control themselves they end up neglecting to meet people in person. because simply connecting with someone through the internet has become so easy connections have lost their meaning and relationships are too easily taken for granted. Children now grow up learning that they are judged, that they will always want things and that they can be easily replaced if they aren't interesting enough. This results in unhealthy coping mechanisms and mindsets that stop an individual from enjoying themselves in life.
